Hi Beady Friends . . . ✨

If you've been on Facebook today (or especially yesterday) you've likely seen a lot of discussion surrounding Swarovski's return to the DIY market. I wanted to share what I know, along with a few personal thoughts:

• In 2020, the people who ran Swarovski (at that time) made the decision to exit the DIY market - under the Swarovski brand. Of note, they did NOT stop manufacturing these items - they did, however, create barriers around who could obtain the Swarovski-branded sparklies. The transition felt abrupt, clumsy, insensitive, and absolutely lacked clear communication, which understandably led to frustration, confusion, and persistent rumors - which haven’t stopped since.

• Beginning in 2021, a number of "Austrian crystal" brands —quite suddenly— entered the market. Some customers embraced these "alternatives," while others chose to move away from Austrian-made crystal altogether. Many businesses, including my own, have carried these products and have continued to find success with them.

• 💥 PLEASE NOTE (and this is an important one): Swarovski remains the sole manufacturer in Austria of mass-produced crystal used in jewelry-making. This is an important fact to keep in mind as discussions continue about Swarovski’s return to the DIY market and the range of “Austrian crystal” brands that have been available through various resellers over the past several years. — IYKYK 😉

• Yesterday, Swarovski announced that they have officially re-entered the DIY market under the Swarovski brand name, effective immediately. As with many major business decisions, there are still questions circulating, and information has not always been communicated from Swarovski as clearly as customers and retailers might prefer (what a shocker).

• As discussions continue online, I encourage everyone to approach speculation with caution. There is a lot we simply do not know about the reasoning behind these decisions. It's perfectly reasonable to have strong opinions, but it's helpful to separate confirmed information from rumors and assumptions.

• Reactions to both the 2020 decision and this recent announcement have varied widely. Some people remain disappointed or even angry, while others are excited to see Swarovski-BRANDED products return. Wherever you fall on that spectrum, your perspective is valid and shaped by your own experiences. My only encouragement is to base those opinions on factual information whenever possible.

• Personally, I continue to have an appreciation for Swarovski products despite the challenges since 2020. Swarovski crystal items were (and continue to be) a significant part of the success of my Etsy shop -my sparkly bread & butter, if you will- and helped create opportunities that ultimately allowed me to open a brick-and-mortar bead shop in my community exactly two years ago.

• I recognize that Swarovski's departure from the DIY market back then was difficult for many businesses and customers. For some, the impact was significant, both financially and operationally, and I understand why those experiences continue to influence how people feel about the company today. I also appreciate the many alternative (NON-Austrian) crystal brands that rose to the occasion, providing beautiful options at a variety of price points and helping to fill a gap for beaders over the past several years who chose not to continue on with any "crystals from Austria." While my personal preference remains Swarovski for its quality and brand recognition, many of these alternatives have become excellent products in their own right - and I'm proud to carry them and do so enthusiastically - and am always growing my selection!

• If Swarovski (branded as Swarovski or anything else) is not a brand you support, I completely respect that choice. I would simply ask that we extend the same respect to others who make a different decision, for their businesses or their beadwork. Distributors and small businesses like Etsy sellers, bead shops, and various other vendors will each determine what is best for their customers and their businesses - and Swarovski crystal items may be the reason they're able to stay in business. Please be kind. And please support them if you can, even if it's by purchasing other items they carry.

✨ Sparkle on my friends . . .

Beads & Bling,
-Leah
