🔧 Studio life isn’t all slip and glazing— sometimes it’s me, a screwdriver, and Baby (my small kiln) getting a little TLC. 💛 Today’s project: swapping out her thermocouple so she can keep firing like a champ. Running a pottery business = wearing all the hats — artist, chemist, mechanic (and occasional kiln whisperer), web designer, photographer, shipper/receiver 😅🔥

Slip’s in, molds are full, now it’s just me, my squeeze bottle, and a little patience until it's time to empty the molds. Keeping the molds topped off is oddly relaxing ☺️

🔥 Fresh from the kiln! 🔥
Today’s glaze firing is out and the shelves are full of shiny new pottery, ready for their dog breed designs 🐾. Opening the kiln always feels like unwrapping gifts… though sometimes it’s more like a white elephant exchange 🙈. A few boo-boos to puzzle over 🤔 — but honestly, what fun would a perfect kiln load be? (Still, wouldn’t mind finding out one day 😂)

A long overdue update. I was forced into a break by an equipment malfunction about a year ago. But before that, there were also some materials that weren't playing well together and causing defects that I had to get to the bottom of. I backtracked and threw myself into some intensive glaze and clay body classes (thanks to ceramicmaterialsworkshop.com) so I could move away from the commercial clay and glazes that I've been using. Not knowing what's in them and how I might adjust them to work better for me was a challenge that I'm coming out the other side of. It's been really fun and interesting learning the chemistry behind glazes and clay bodies, and I have lots of pint container samples all over my studio that attest to my hours of learning. My machine issues are hopefully resolving. My trusty ceramic decal printer had a mechanical repair. But she needs a reboot of her developer. The ceramic materials (4 color ceramic pigment toner and developer) I need come from Germany so it'll take some time to receive them and then do the required work to remove the old developer and replace it with fresh developer. I'll try to remember to show photos of that messy process 🫤 Bye for now.

Banded lots of wine stopper tops yesterday so I can replenish my stock of dog wine stoppers 🐶 ⁠ In the Skutt now firing away. Fingers crossed for a perfect batch 🤞🙂⁠⁠

i’m glazing pottery today and busting ghosts, apparently. I found this jumpsuit at the Halloween store this last year and it’s perfect for keeping my clothes from getting splattered with glaze, and it’s fun 👻 It’s a rainy day here and had to drag myself into the studio. It’s been hard to stay motivated lately because of all the sales tax and inventory and other tax stuff to be done. Plus it’s cold out here ❄️ But I’m ready to bring this batch to life with some glaze and move on to the the fun part of decorating it with 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

Zeus and the Christmas Chihuahua, finally out of storage after a long year in a box. Christmas came late to our house with things being so busy in the studio. I wouldn't have it any other way - it's been very fun 😊
