Grandma's Old-Fashioned Banana Pudding — from scratch 🍌❤️
This is not the version made with instant pudding and Cool Whip. This is the real thing. Homemade vanilla custard stirred slowly on the stove until thick and rich, layered with fresh bananas and Nilla wafers, topped with real meringue baked to a beautiful golden brown.
This recipe has been in families for generations. There is a reason for that. No shortcut has ever come close to the real thing.
The secret is patience. Stir the custard slowly and constantly over medium-low heat — fifteen to twenty minutes of gentle stirring. It cannot be rushed. But when it thickens to that perfect rich consistency and you pour it warm over the wafers and bananas — you will understand immediately why your grandmother made it this way.
Make it today. Refrigerate overnight. Serve it tomorrow and watch what happens at the table.
