Remember that story about the birthday rose? Well, Cindy came in yesterday with the sweetest card and a whole beautiful Jewish apple cake to say thank you.

It was still warm from the oven!

And absolutely delicious. I was able to share it with the girls at the shop, a customer that came in late, take a couple pieces to Bill Harlan at Belvedere Farm, with plenty left to bring home to my family.

The cake that keeps on giving! Thank you so much Cindy. And I need that recipe!

Another picture below 🙂

Thank you everyone for helping the local growers sell their dahlias! We are in luck and most farms are reporting that even though temps dipped, they were spared from frost!

So that means at least another week of local flowers, looking at the weather.

We have three bunches left from yesterday’s harvest. $25 each and porch pick up at my house in Fallston if anyone is interested. Message me if you’d like one! (I live close to the shop near Fallston rec). We can do Venmo or cash.

And if you’d like a bunch this upcoming week- let me know (open Wednesday-Saturday).

Thanks again!

DAHLIA FLASH SALE THIS SATURDAY ! 🌸💛

UPDATE: PREORDERS HAVE CLOSED!

Well, it’s here! And it’s going to be a whirlwind. We just had to get through the dance orders this week and then onto the next project!

There is a frost in the forecast this weekend and local growers are harvesting as much as they can on Friday and Saturday with the threat coming on Saturday night. We are helping them get their blooms from the fields to your home before they are all gone.

They call it “Frostmas” in the grower’s world and if for some reason we make it through the weekend and the flowers survive the temps, we might do another flash sale for them next week too. Double dahlias!

Bunches will be $35 and will each have a lovely assortment of locally grown Dahlias in all sizes, shapes and colors. We may have some other goodies from the farms too that you can mix in with your dahlias. Those will be available a la carte in addition to dahlias on Saturday.

We have 4-5 farms participating.

Pick up at Washday Floral ONLY - 2414 Pleasantville from 10-4 on Saturday, October 17th. Please be sure to choose that date during checkout.

You can reserve however many bunches you want & pay in three ways - Venmo $35 to Tiffany-Rueckert with pink flowers on my head code 3661 if needed. You can pay on our website, or you can reserve them in the comments below, or message or text me, and I’ll get you on the list to pay cash or swipe a card in the shop.

I’m sure I’ll have enough for walk-ins, but pre-ordering will guarantee your bunches.

It’s always so reaffirming to me to see how our Washday community rallies around to support our local growers. They are so grateful for this support - it’s really a two way thank you isn’t it?? A big thank you from us for all of their hard work!

Order on the website: washdayfloral.com
Order Venmo: https://venmo.com/u/Tiffany-Rueckert

(Pictures are from local dahlia deliveries over the years, not the exact varieties we will have this weekend but we will indeed have many many varieties!).

A moment for art.

You know when you hear some snippet of advice that you never forget? My friend Briana Briana Almengor, who happens to have a birthday on Thursday, told me once that a friend of hers told her to “take moments for art”.

Apparently this advice stuck with her, stuck with me and now I’ll pass it to you.

I’m of the opinion that really whatever stage of life, season, income, space or situation you find yourself in there’s art to be found, art to be made.

It could be physically creating art in a more traditional way but it can also mean making a pretty little meal, taking cuttings from your yard, a moment for music you love on a crisp fall night, a bit of whimsy in your decor, some color on your porch, a pause for a pretty picture, rearranging a room, hanging a picture, maybe even re-situating things or trying a new angle.

So I spent some time this afternoon with moments of art.

I clipped some coleus and spindly zinnias and put them in my new birthday vase from my sister. (My new nut bowl from Longwood Gardens !) fall candle burning.

I situated new mums and cabbages and pumpkins around my summer coleus. When the coleus freezes (or I bring them in) I’ll plant the others in my planters.

Greek yogurt with chopped pears, maple granola, walnuts and cinnamon for my dinner while the boys happily ate leftover spaghetti. I also had sourdough toast with my mom’s homemade raspberry rhubarb jam she sent me for my birthday. As I get older I need lighter dinners- anyone else feeling like this?

Elliott Smith’s XO spinning.

Pretty moths from SCHOOLHOUSE dancing up the wall.

Just a few moments. It doesn’t take too much time but it sure fills me up.

Have you made any moments for art lately? How does it make you feel?

Or maybe you will soon. I hope you’ll share when you do. I’d love to see how you take a moment for art. 💛

Tic Tac GOOOO!

We have over 120 dance pick ups today! And about 40 yesterday. So I am strapping on the trainers and the hair will be on the top of my head, per usual.

It’s go time.

I was at the shop until 2:30 last night combing through everything - and we are doing great!

But I am human. Our whole team is actually human. We are doing our absolute best to bring you some really beautiful things but occasionally there’s something we miss. When over half of those orders are matching sets, that’s getting us well over 200 custom pieces we’ve made this week, so if I missed your follow up email about changing the ribbon color on the boutonnière or if there’s some other teensy hiccup, rest assured that we have plenty of flowers, two designers, multiple helpers and we want you to leave our shop absolutely thrilled about your dance orders.

THINGS TO NOTE:

Over 30 people chose 10 am as a pick up time. We will help everyone in order of when they come, but please don’t hesitate to come a bit later than 10. Also, browse around the cute shop or chat it up with a friend you bump into if we are working on finding orders for others.

Whatever you do don’t stand and stare at us impatiently. Ha ha… we will have a sign in and we will find your order and find you ASAP. We do go over every order with every customer to be sure you are happy.

If you have any issues with what we have created, be kind. We are here to make it right, so no need to come out of the gates hard. You really have no idea how far we bend backwards to help everyone and how hard we work to make everything pretty. We will fix anything right there on the spot, please never leave our shop disappointed. 💛

If you or someone you know are scrambling and need anything last minute, we can most likely help if you can pick up this afternoon!

You can try and call first at 801-856-3661 and if I’m with a customer and don’t answer you can text me at that same number. We have everything to make last minute boutonnières, corsages and posies.

Thank you for all of your orders! We are really looking forward to seeing you today! 💛

I’m 48 today.

And I thought I’d share a sweet interaction I had yesterday at the shop.

We are closed on Tuesdays but I am often here working and prepping for the design week ahead. Yesterday was no different and even more prep than usual with over 150 dance orders to prepare for and a few events.

I had also set up to have a new local vendor drop off her delicious rosemary freckled sea salt to the shop at 11. After chatting with her a bit up at the register I noticed a car pulling in and so I walked with Kara to the door as she was leaving to greet the woman who had just pulled in before I locked the door again.

The woman stopped mid stride and said “You are closed, aren’t you?”

“Technically, yes.” I replied, “but we are here. Did you need anything in particular? You are welcome to come in.”

“Oh no, no… I don’t want to bother you. I’m sorry. It’s okay.”

“No, really. It’s okay! Come in! Let me know how we can help you.”

“Are you sure? Really?”

I assure her that it’s not a problem and she accepts the offer and continues toward the door.

She then tells me she just needs one single flower, a purple rose if we have one.

I tell her we don’t have any lavender roses, but we just got a kind of purply fuschia rose in that I love. I show it to her and she absolutely loves it.

And she tells me it’s for her daughter’s birthday and she was on her way to visit her at Highland Memorial Gardens up the road. She would have been 47.

I’m a little speechless as I make a connection.

“My birthday is tomorrow” I tell her, “And I’ll be 48”.

She gets a bit teary and tells me her daughter was 38 when she passed, and that she had her when she was quite young - age 20. I tell her my mom was 21, and we find out they were born just a couple years apart.

She says she can’t even believe it.

She asks how much for the rose and I tell her it’s a gift. A birthday gift to my birthday twin.

We are both struck by the moment and I walk her to the door and tell her how lucky I feel that I had been near the door when she pulled in and parked.

We both agree it was just meant to be. A birthday gift for Jennifer ended up being a special gift for me.

Happy birthday 1978 and 1979. 💛

Last night we were unloading mums for today’s pre-order pick ups. Grown in local soil, delivered by a local family, received by my own family and placed in front of our small shop. For you, who will receive them and return home to enjoy.

The grower reached out to me on Tuesday. I posted on Wednesday and by Thursday we had sold 68 of his mums. He was over the moon. It was a fast turn around, and if you’ve been around Washday enough you know this is what we do. If the farmers reach out and need to move a product, we help them move it.

Washday is a flower shop but it’s also a serious community that cares about supporting local. And you’ve always responded to the call. You’ve built that reputation.

When I took this picture last night two things struck me. There were the mums of course, and then there was the art in the window. And that’s the other thing.

I can’t tell you how many hours my sister Cortney puts into all of the hand made art installations in the shop. All the hours she puts into creating flyers and coupons and pretty things for our SCHOOLHOUSE account.

And not only do we believe in her art, but we hire other artists. Our friend Jennilyn helps to conceptualize and design our window display. She does an amazing job and we hope you’ve stopped to notice!

The giant leaves are created from recycled cardboard that has been hand-cut hand-painted and hand-stitched. Truly stunning.

In this fast paced digital world where it’s easy to blur the lines of reality, it’s a deep breath of fresh air.

So this is just a thank you for being here. Supporting all the steps that make this a very real, very intentional, very thoughtful and supportive community business.

We truly hope that all of the ways we reach out help you feel connected and inspired. We hope your senses are immersed, and you can feel a sense of artistic expression and creativity and in turn continue to ripple that out into your own lives.

We will have about 10 extra mums to sell today. Everything else is ordered and added to my spreadsheet . I’m not exactly sure what colors we will have for the extras, but they will be first come, first serve. Thank you everyone for your support!

✨Important announcement for dance orders!✨

We will be closing orders on our website TODAY at 5pm for the weekend of 10/9-10/10 . It’s been absolutely wild and I know other florists that have told me they are already booked too. So spread the word! If you have your order in, might tell your friends. Some newer high school parents don’t understand how you have to get orders in earlier than the week of the dance to guarantee your spot!

I was about to just shut it all down but I thought I’d give you until 5pm, then I will have to close online ordering to assess our numbers and flower orders and see if we can take on any more.

We will be waitlist only after 5pm. If you don’t know colors, choose custom and please please respond with an update by Monday. These kids need to make decisions - ha ha!

Thank you for understanding!

Online ordering is best- there’s a notes section and you can upload a picture too and schedule the day and time.
