Owen Cameron born
June 30 1917 in Portage, Quebec, Canada, came to the US at age 12. One of 10 children he came to live with an older brother in the Detroit area. Owen had a paper route and put himself through 10th grade at UofD Catholic School. He then bought a truck and delivered coal. He started sanding floors when Irving Raskin asked him if he would be interested in working for him and gave him a floor sanding job. Owen joined the army and went to war. When he returned he married Mae Fillion and had 6 children. He started Cameron the Sandman in 1936. The company has had numerous addresses in the Detroit area over the years. Many years the company was run out of the family home, Mae took care of the books. It has remained at its current address in Farmington since late 1976. There were 13 trucks with 52 employees at the busiest time in the company history. Currently there are 5 trucks and 11 employees. In 1974 the company was purchased from Owen by his son, Greg, the current owner. A third generation now works in the business, Joel, Jason & sometimes Justin, All three were fortunate to have worked with their grandfather and father from gyms to private custom work. A fourth generation is a possibility currently 3 great-grandson’s of Owen growing up in the family business.
