The Title: 3 Bees on a pink flower
Prologue: Another piece I first encountered at the Florida State Beekeepers Association convention in 2025. I scoured the convention looking for the artist in order to purchase this work. I did finally locate the Doctor, but alas my efforts were in vein as she decided not to part with the artwork. Yet, I persist. I reached out again months later via facebook and instagram, those messages falling on deaf ears. By chance I bumped into the Doctor once more at the North American honey bee expo in Louisville KY, proclaiming my desire for the artwork. This time was a success, plans were made and peace befallen my spirit.
The Art: 1/1 Felted wool
The Feeling: When I first saw this piece I was amazed by its tapestry, then captivated by the detail in the in focus honey bee. The depth is captured in multifaceted ways. First the entire piece is made of dyed wool expertly woven into a serene scene. The texture emulates the fuzzy nature of our dear friends Apis Mellefera. Then you observe the scene, tranquility in motion. Every time I look at this, I can smell spring, the fragrant bloom of flowers, petrichor, and pollen from the weeds. I can hear the light hum of the bees hard at work, the spring breeze rustling the trees. I can feel the sunlight warming my skin and the cool breeze washing over me. I can taste the ice cream I am enjoying in the field and the thick pollen adorning my tongue as I breathe in deeply. I can see the bees toiling for the betterment of their colonies and in turn the betterment of all living organisms on the planet. There is one bee that is in focus that has so much anatomical detail that it is hard to believe this is composed with wool and needle. The proportions, the coloration, down to the mandibles exhibit a knowledge and care that one must highly appreciate. In the background you find two more bees, perhaps working in conjunction with one another at the direction of a sister's smooth dance moves on the comb dance floors.
What this piece says to me is “focus” when you focus on your craft the picture becomes clear. The workings of other remain out of focus because they may or may not share in the vision. The collective works is what propels our community forward. Even if that work seemingly seems myopic at first glance, the positive ramifications of that work could spur an entire ecosystem of prosperity.
