Knock Knock

One of these days I think I'm going to have to leave the door open just to see what our reoccurring visitors do. Our small dinosaurs here have grown quite accustomed to their daily treats of various scraps flung carefully from the porch when I'm cleaning up after meals. They definitely notice and start loitering if they don't get their treat. Remember folks your chances of being killed by a disgruntled chicken are low... but not zero.

Saving it for a rainy day

Using some of our beans we set aside from the other day we cooked and canned up a batch of our favorite chili recipe for those nights we don't feel like cooking. Making higher quality convenience foods to help us out on those longer days is something we have been working on for a while. Learning to can has been a big step in achieving this dream and we are excited to learn more as we go.

Baking the world a better place

With mom back in action for this week's sweet treat, it seems she may have been a little rusty. Tackling this delicious recipe from Homesteading Family, she may have had to upgrade her pan size mid bake, resulting in a unique finish on the top, it did not do anything to damage these seriously delectable brownies. These things are truly awesome. Try them out for yourself at the link below and you will be glad that you did. Just be sure to use the right pan size.

Sprawling Spuds

The potatoes have taken off. They have taken over a good chunk of the porch as we eagerly await to excavate the assortment of potatoes varieties we planted. The basket has held up well, is easily moved and easy to cover when the spuds need some assistance. We are excited to find out if this will produce an adequate yield or if we will have to adapt to more traditional methods.

You've been beaned

Working on some of our kitchen stores here during the lovely wet weather. Will be happy to have these kidney beans ready to go this fall. Needed to add just a bit more water to these guys but we will use this batch here soon and adjust what we learned on the next. They may not be the prettiest looking, but they taste good. Once we get these ironed out, up next will be canning our chili recipe for the cold days this fall.

Have a great Memorial Day!

Take a moment today to think of those who this day is all about and who made it possible. More importantly enjoy it for those who can't. We have wanted a proper flagpole ever since we moved in and am happy that we finally took some time to make that happen. It serves as a reminder that every day is Memorial Day, and that none of this would be possible without the brave men and women who came before and paid the ultimate price.

Dad's Redemption

Since Broken Road Farm sent some of their rainy days up here to Kentucky, Dad took another stab at making a sweet treat. These cheesecake pancakes were a crowd favorite. Sweet and savory with pockets of cream cheese adding a delightful texture these things do not miss.
