People often ask what takes so long in a design project. This corner is the answer.

It’s the art of layering.

It’s not simply choosing a beautiful rug, sofa, console, mirror and pillows. The rug has to work with the sofa fabric. The pillows have to speak to both, while also connecting to other colors and materials in the room. The console finish has to complement the fabrics without disappearing into them. The wall color has to work with the accent material, the flooring and the way light moves through the space. The scale and shape of the mirror have to balance what surrounds it and guide where the eye lands.

And when one decision changes, it can affect several others.

That’s the part of design you don’t necessarily see in the finished photograph.

Design is the result of hundreds of individual decisions and the relationships between them that make a room feel as though everything was meant to be together.
