Introduction to Galangal
Galangal is a perennial plant that originated in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. For centuries, it has played a significant role in both culinary and medicinal traditions across the region. Cultivating Galangal

• Begin by planting galangal rhizomes in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil that contains plenty of organic matter. Choose a location that receives partial shade or filtered sunlight.
• Maintain consistent moisture in the soil by watering regularly, but avoid waterlogging. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
• Rhizomes are best planted in the spring, at a depth of 2 to 3 inches beneath the soil surface, with approximately 12 inches between each rhizome to allow for growth.
• Galangal can be grown successfully in both garden beds and containers. Mature plants typically reach a height of 4 to 6 feet.
• The roots are ready for harvest after about 10 to 12 months, once the plant is fully mature and the foliage starts to yellow.
