Let’s talk viruses for a minute. Viruses in dahlias is the risk we take when we go to grow these beauties but it doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking when we find one that is presenting with signs of a virus.

The ADS (American Dahlia Society) says that approximately 87% of dahlias have at least ONE virus but can remain asymptomatic. If this was a game of poker and I had an 87% chance of losing, I would fold… but we are crazy flower people who love our dahlias and are willing to take the risk! 🤣

Viruses will be an area we will talk about during my Grow Your Best Dahlias workshop on May 23rd as I know it can be a hot topic! My hot take… the best defense is a good offense!

There is nothing worse than forgetting to label your dahlias and then the frost comes and you can’t remember what is what because everything is the same sad looking ugly brown!

While you’re waiting to plant out your tubers now is a great time to work on making your labels so you can put them next to your tubers as you plant them out!

If you want to learn more about growing your best dahlias and are local to western MA, comment Dahlia and I’ll send you a link about our upcoming workshop!

We got a question about, what do I do with the tubers before I plant anything or can they go straight in the ground when warm enough?

It’s a great question because there are a few different things that you can do before planting them out or yes, you can just plant them directly out once the soil is warm enough!

I hope this gives a little more insight into what I do with my tubers but if you really want to learn about getting a great start to your dahlias, I am hosting a workshop at our micro farm on May 23rd.

I had so much fun at my first tuber sale this past weekend! I loved meeting other people that love dahlias and obviously, talking about all things dahlias.

I got asked one question over and over again… When can I plant my tubers?

I get it, we are all excited to get our hands in the dirt and start to see things grow but, when it comes to dahlia tubers you need to exercise caution.

Nothing will make a tuber rot faster than cold, wet soil. So while after the last frost is a general rule of thumb, you also need to embrace your inner old man that constantly watches the weather to make sure there isn’t a long period of rain ahead and that the soil is truly warm enough.

I generally wait til the end of May to get our tubers in. First, this gives me an opportunity to get everything thing else planted and two, by the end of May (at lease here in western MA) the rain has slowed down and I know the soil temp is much warmer allowing tubers to start growing more quickly!

If you have a dahlia question let me know in the comments 😊
