I was stuck between reality and a dream.
I could feel everything in the room but could not move or open my eyes.
I tried to cry out for help.
A growing darkness was menacingly laughing, creeping up from the foot of my bed.
My curtains fluttered open.
I felt a weight land on the bed. As I awoke a large regal ornate bird puffed up his gold plumage, dialed his eye wide open.
I felt pulled into the calm embrace in his eye.
I felt at peace, protected.
The bird turned and flew out through the curtains.
I’ve never since been frozen between worlds or freighted by unreal things in the darkness.
This was months after hearing the Thunderbird call on top of the Grand Mesa.
I don’t tell myself that it was absolutely provably real, but it did happen to me in vivid detail.
It continues to be an important moment of my life.
