Flynn Woodcraft

Flynn Woodcraft Hand turned bowls and wares made from locally sourced wood on Cape Cod. I am interested in crafting pieces from forest to finish.

Pacific Turns started out as a summer whittling hobby, and has since grown into a small business focused on turning quality, functional wood art made from sustainably gathered and salvaged wood. Once the mechanics of turning on a lathe clicked it became difficult to put the tools to rest. This means that each piece of wood I turn has been personally gathered, prepared, and turned by me. Discarded

logs are collected from parks, sustainably gathered from the forest, or gifted to me from friends and neighbors. Whenever possible I salvage wood from firewood piles, or garner logs from homeowners and farmers who have decided to remove trees from their grounds. All of the wood used at Pacific Turns is recycled or reclaimed, I do not purchase wood or harvest trees to support my craft. By doing this I can give new life and purpose to each piece of wood an minimize any negative impact on the forest and my community. It's a constant adventure keeping a keen eye out for branches on the ground and changes to the landscape that may leave a trunk available. It requires attentiveness and patience to find the design within each branch or trunk. There is no metal joinery and most of the crafts that I turn are made out of a single piece of wood. The rings of the baby rattles were once connected to the knobs they now clap against, and the contrasting colors of the bowls are the results of the grains, knots, and spalting, which makes each tree unique. If you have questions or request please don't hesitate to contact me.

Spent a little time messing around with Christmas ornament designs. I went a title to thin with this one but it was nice to do something different today. Looking forward to making more this week!

Tomorrow mornings work all lined up and ready to go. These came from a 14” sycamore log that was taken down this fall on the Cape.
-I’ll first use the bands saw to make the 1/2 logs into circles and the wood will start to look more bowl like.
-Then the bowl blanks will be rough shaped on the lathe and then cored out to get 2 bowls form each blank.

The rippled figuring in this maple bowl is stunning!

Cape Cod isn’t known for its timber but it does have some gems to be found.

Here’s a little throwback from bowls that I did 6-8 years ago. Some of the wood that I was able to get my hands on then was stunning! Black Walnut and cherry never disappoint.

There’s a new addition to Flynn Woodcraft! It took way longer than expected to complete but here it is.
I recently finished up this solar kiln to dry woodturning stock, mostly “roughed out” wood bowls. It’s been taking well over a year, closer to two for the bowls I’ve been making to dry in our basement.
This new solar kiln should cut the time down to hopefully 3-4 months. Inside, there are two 12” fans powered by the solar panel on the side of the kiln. Can’t wait load it up next week and get to bowl drying!
Stay tuned!!
