Lyra Starcatcher 🌟
Original watercolor painting by Alessandra Jann-Jordan

A Celtic woman reaches upward in a gesture of openness and trust, catching falling stars in her left hand while gently holding a butterfly in her right. Rather than striving or resisting, she embodies the quiet practice of receiving—the idea that transformation often begins when we become receptive to possibility, wonder, and the unexpected gifts life places before us.

Three owls watch over her from an ornate border, symbols of inner wisdom, intuition, and spiritual growth. They perch within a “Tree of Magic,” representing the enduring connection between earth and heaven, the seen and the unseen, and the mystery that exists between them.

The butterfly, a timeless emblem of transformation, echoes the painting’s invitation to embrace change with hope rather than fear, while the falling stars remind us that miracles often arrive when our hands—and hearts—remain open.

Adding a historical touch, the necklace she wears is inspired by a cabochon gem brooch designed by the celebrated French jeweler Alexis Falize, circa 1855.

For much of my life, I thought service and art belonged in different moral categories.

As a social worker, my life revolved around caregiving, crisis, responsibility, and helping others. Art often felt secondary by comparison.

Over time, I’ve come to see things differently.

I now believe that creating beauty can also be a form of service—not because art fixes the world, but because beauty reminds us that the world is still worth loving despite its suffering.

This quote is from my essay, Bringing Beauty into the World.

✨ A small journey through some of my recent watercolor and gold leaf paintings. ✨

Each piece begins as a spark of imagination and gradually unfolds through many layers of paint, shimmer, and countless hours in the studio.

Creating fantasy art is both a creative and meditative practice for me, and I’m grateful to share this journey with you. Thank you for being here and supporting my work. ❤️

Which painting speaks to you the most? I’d love to know in the comments.

🌙 Moonlit Procession, 2026 🌙

Watercolor painting by Alessandra Jann-Jordan of AJJ Arts

ajjarts.com

There is a brief and magical moment each evening when the last light of day yields to the first breath of night, the earliest stars begin to appear, and the world seems touched by a little more wonder than usual. Moonlit Procession was inspired by that enchanted hour, when twilight lingers and imagination feels close at hand.

Beneath a luminous moon, a fairy princess rides her white horse through an ancient woodland. Beside her travel two winged foxes, while overhead a crowned guardian glides silently through the starlit sky. Together they move in quiet procession through a realm illuminated by moonlight, gold, and wonder.

The travelers move quietly through the forest, as though sharing secrets known only to those who journey beneath the stars. The two winged foxes seem deep in conversation.

Perhaps one says in quiet wonder, “Isn’t it beautiful how, between the last light of day and the first breath of night, the world becomes a little more enchanted?”
And the other replies, “Indeed. There are some wonders that daylight reveals, and others that only awaken beneath the stars.”

Moonlit Procession is an invitation to wander for a while beneath the stars, where fairy princesses, winged foxes, and ancient guardians still travel together through moonlit forests, and where a touch of magic can still be found in the quiet hours between twilight and night.

This year’s Christmas angel has begun — starting, as always, in pencil.

There’s something I love about this stage… the quiet, the patience, the slow emergence of form and feeling.

My goal is to complete her by July so she can be printed in time for the Christmas season.

I’m looking forward to sharing more as she develops.

✨ Original watercolor painting ✨

Her name suggests “valley”—a place where love must descend and endure, not just soar.

Long before roses were ever gathered for love, she already existed—born in the quiet moment a human heart first chose love over fear.

She is often called upon Valentine’s Day, when roses are exchanged and promises are spoken in candlelight—but her true work begins in the quiet that follows. She lingers in the spaces where love falters, where doubt seeps in, where distance begins to grow unnoticed.

Her wings carry the blush of first love, feathered with a warmth that speaks of devotion—the kind that survives winter. The hearts woven into her translucent mantle are not merely decorative; they echo the vows once spoken in earnest, carried quietly across time.

She does not inspire infatuation. She protects endurance.

When two people choose forgiveness instead of pride, she is there.

When someone risks vulnerability instead of silence, she is there.

When love matures from fire into steady light, she stands behind it, unseen.

Her halo does not glow because she is perfect—it glows because she understands that love endures.

And bravery is sacred.

A glimpse while she’s still becoming.

There’s always a moment when a painting stops feeling like an idea and starts feeling like someone.

She’s not finished yet, but she’s close.

She was meant for Valentine’s Day—but she stayed, somewhere beyond it… in the quieter kind of love that endures.

Amara, Angel of the Maple’s Turning
Watercolor painting, 2025

✨ Original watercolor painting ✨

When the maples burn and the air carries the scent of change—cool and faintly sweet against the skin—she moves among them.

In the amber hush of autumn, she is a quiet witness of the season. Present as the year loosens its grip, as color deepens and light softens toward winter.

The elders call her Amara—a name that holds sweetness and ache together. They speak of the maple as a teacher of more than one lesson. In spring, it offers its sweetness—sap rising after the long cold, sustaining life when the earth is still waking. That sweetness is not indulgence; it is survival. It is what endures and gives because it has endured.

But the maple does not teach only through sweetness.
In autumn, it turns inward. What once reached outward now gathers itself back. Leaves blaze briefly before they fall, returning to the soil that once fed them. The tree does not cling to what cannot be carried through winter. It keeps what will sustain life and lets the rest fall away.

Here, in the blaze before winter, Amara accompanies what has been gathered and what must now be set down. Not everything is meant to be taken forward. What is carried into winter is chosen with care.

Those who notice her feel a quiet clarity—a steadiness, as if something long held has finally been named and laid aside. What is released has already shaped what remains. In the space it leaves behind, there is breath enough for what comes next, and a warmth held in the fading light.

When the last leaves fall, Amara recedes with the color from the trees.

Winter waits.

She’s taking shape slowly, feather by feather, leaf by leaf, as this piece quietly finds its voice. I love this tender middle stage where color begins to sing and the story starts to reveal itself.
Every layer feels like autumn settling in, full of warmth, change, and soft transformation. 🍁
