I was born on the island of Moloka'i and raised in Honolulu. I graduated from Farrington High School in 1964, then joined the Women's Army Corp. It was during the Viet Nam War.

After completing my 3-year service, I became anxious to return home and start visiting with my "Tutu-Lady" (maternal grandmother) on Moloka'i. My grandfather, Damien Kamahele, had passed away from cancer at the tender age of 49, and although I was only 10 years old at the time, I remember how much we all missed him.

My grandmother, Maria Pea, continued to live in Ho'olehua on homestead land. Every chance I had I would spend weekends with her. Although she was no longer raising pigs and chickens, her Macadamia nut orchard still existed. Her Ti plants were as healthy as ever and she used them for medicinal purposes whenever a relative or neighbor needed help. On her kerosene stove, she always cooked the best meals in the world, and yes, again used her Ti leaves often to wrap and cook with, and sometimes to cover her food.

Not until later on in my life did I understand how much the Ti plant meant to both my Tutu-lady and my mother. How important, useful and revered this "canoe plant" must have been to the first Polynesians who settled in Hawaii.

I hope to instill in the minds and hearts of all who see my photography an appreciation for the pure beauty of the traditional green Ti and how it has evolved through the passage of time of a life raised above the struggle for survival.
