Luxury Vinyl Planks vs Laminate
Since working in the design space over the years the most common question I have received from homeowners and investors alike: What is the difference between luxury vinyl planks (LVP) and laminate flooring and what would be best for my project? There are many things you want to factor in when making this decision: budget, lifestyle and durability. Here’s my short list of pros and cons along with their pros and cons, so let's dive right into it!
Luxury Vinyl Planks (LVP) are made from multiple layers of PVC vinyl, topped with a high-definition photographic layer that mimics the look of wood, stone, or tile.
Pros:
Waterproof: Ideal for high-moisture areas like bathrooms and kitchens
Durable: Resistant to scratches and dents.
Easy to Clean: Can be wet mopped.
Cons:
VOC''s: May emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) initially. Repairs: Damaged planks can be difficult to replace.
Laminate flooring is a high-density fiberboard (HDF) core topped with a photographic layer that replicates wood, stone, or tile, and a clear protective layer.
Pros:
Affordable: Generally cheaper than LVP
Stylish: Offers a wide variety of styles and finishes.
Comfortable: Thicker composition makes it comfortable to walk on
Eco-Friendly: Often made from recycled materials.
Cons:
Not Waterproof: Only water-resistant, not suitable for high-moisture areas.
Sensitive to Moisture: Can swell or warp if exposed to water.
Cleaning Options: Cannot be wet mopped.
