A finished kitchen is what you see. The design decisions that made it work happened long before construction began.

For this kitchen, we made intentional choices at every step:

→ Reused the existing countertop where it made sense, allowing us to preserve something that worked while being thoughtful about the budget.

→ Splurged on Italian marble for the island, creating a focal point worthy of the investment.

→ Repeated wood elements from the island shelf through the glass-front cabinetry to create visual connection.

→ Layered materials, finishes, and details so each element relates to the next.

→ Added a vintage rug that brings the colors, textures, and materials throughout the kitchen together.

Good design isn't simply about selecting beautiful things. It's about understanding how those things relate to one another—and knowing where to invest, where to reuse, and where the smallest detail can make the biggest difference.

The finished kitchen is the result.

The intentionality behind it is what makes it work.

A labor of love, collaboration, and a little bit of Round Top magic.

This mural began as an entry for the Benjamin Moore Faces of Design competition, but somewhere along the way, it became something much more meaningful.

My boys helped bring the idea to life alongside local Texas artist Julie Pickett, who translated the beauty of the Round Top landscape into a custom mural designed specifically for this home.

The rolling hills. The native botanicals. The colors of the landscape. The quiet beauty that makes Round Top feel like Round Top.

While we weren’t selected for Faces of Design, we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to create this piece—and even more grateful for the finished story.

What started as a competition entry became a true collaboration between my boys, a local artist, and our design studio, resulting in something completely original and deeply connected to its place.

Because sometimes the greatest part of a project isn't the recognition.

It’s the story you get to tell when it’s finished.

Designed with intention. Collected with meaning. Rooted in place.

Round Top is calling!

With Antiques Week just around the corner, we're celebrating one of our favorite things about Round Top: finding one-of-a-kind pieces and giving them new life.

For our recently completed Round Top project, our firm sourced these antique botanicals and commissioned a local artisan to hand-paint the frames in a rich crimson, thoughtfully tying them to the entry cabinetry featured in Tuesday's post, as well as the piping on the custom headboard and window cushion.

It's these intentional details that create a sense of continuity throughout a home while allowing each space to tell its own story.

As we look forward to another season of antique hunting, we're reminded that the most beautiful homes aren't created overnight. They're thoughtfully collected over time.

A thoughtful balance of old and new.

For our recently completed project, we preserved the home's existing Austin stone fireplace and introduced tumbled limestone floors as a nod to the surrounding Texas landscape.

Bold, timeless hues, like the deep crimson cabinetry in the entry, bring personality and warmth while creating a beautiful contrast with the natural materials.

The result is a collected, inviting home that honors its surroundings while reflecting the people who live within it.

The finished room is only part of the story. The sourcing, problem-solving, and countless decisions behind it are what make a space feel intentional.

Remember our post from August 13th, when we shared this home featured in Better Homes & Gardens?

We wanted to take you behind the scenes and show you a small part of the process that brought this home to life.

Long before the finished photographs, there were construction documents, preliminary meetings, detailed conversations, problem-solving, and collaboration in the field.

For this project, I created construction documents for our preliminary meeting to clearly communicate the design intent and help everyone understand the details before we stepped into the field.

Because the finished space is only part of the story.

The real work happens behind the scenes—where design, documentation, and collaboration come together.

From document → to conversation → to finished space.

Three years ago, Paula Dixon Design was founded for more reasons than could ever fit into a single post.

Since then, we've had the privilege of partnering with incredible clients, collaborating with talented artisans and trades, and transforming houses into thoughtfully curated homes that reflect the people who live within them.

Over the past three years, there have been highs and lows, victories and setbacks, and countless lessons learned. Through it all, our purpose has remained the same: to create homes for a community we love through intentional design.

Intentional doesn't mean predictable. We believe every home should tell a unique story. We love pushing creative boundaries, encouraging our clients to embrace bold decisions, and crafting spaces that feel deeply personal while standing the test of time.

The greatest measure of our success isn't the number of projects we've completed—it's the trust our clients have placed in us to steward their homes and their stories.

I am especially grateful for the people who have walked alongside me throughout this journey. Abby has been a meaningful part of the story, helping support the growth of this vision and the community we are building. Her dedication, encouragement, and partnership have been a gift.

Here's to the next chapter—designing homes that will be lived in, loved, and passed down for generations. We are deeply grateful for the trust, encouragement, and referrals that have allowed us to continue growing.

Thank you for being part of our story.

Remember this kitchen?

Featured in Better Homes & Gardens, this space is a reflection of thoughtful design, intentional selections, and the many layers that bring a vision to life.

There’s so much more behind the finished space.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we share a behind-the-scenes look at our design process and the intentional decisions behind the choices that made this kitchen truly one of a kind.

This summer, we're celebrating homes that shine—not because they're filled with more, but because every detail has been chosen with intention.

Design isn't defined by how much you purchase. It's defined by how thoughtfully every piece contributes to the story of your home.

In this space, our client already owned the piano. Rather than replacing it, we embraced it as the heart of the room and thoughtfully layered in décor and styling that complemented its presence and completed the overall design.

When we begin a project, we don't assume every room needs a fresh start. We carefully evaluate the furnishings, artwork, and heirloom pieces our clients already own. If a piece supports the vision, it earns its place in the next chapter of the home.

The result is an interior that feels collected rather than decorated, refined rather than excessive, and timeless instead of trend-driven.

As part of our Summer to Shine, we're reminded that the brightest homes aren't those with the most possessions. They're the ones where every detail has meaning, every layer serves a purpose, and every space reflects the people who live there.

Because true luxury isn't about having more—it's about choosing well.
