What started as a Jenga look-a-like transformed to this beautiful piece!

We took those raw, stacked blocks from the first photo, stained the end-grains in a bold barn red, solid white, and navy blue, and meticulously assembled them into this stunning 3D Textured American Flag Wall Mosaic. This build is actually a personal piece heading straight onto my own wall at home! I love using my own space to test out new designs before opening them up to everyone else!

By hand-arranging the end-grain blocks at staggered depths and framing them with a rich, dark walnut border, it creates an incredible 3D effect that completely brings the natural wood grain to life. No flimsy plastic, no cheap stencils—just heavy, durable, solid craftsmanship built right here in Idaho Falls.

From raw timber to a custom white finish!!

Pulling back the curtain on a recent custom order! This is a mini but MIGHTY 32-inch blanket ladder, handcrafted to fit a client's specific space and finished in a custom white paint to match their home's aesthetic.

No shortcuts here! Just careful sanding, tight glued joints, and solid construction from start to finish. Look at that satisfying final reveal!

Settle a home styling mystery for me...🧐

We’ve all got that one spot in the house. The awkward, empty living room corner next to the TV, or that blank wall at the end of the hallway that just feels cold and missing something. You don't want a massive, bulky piece of furniture overcrowding the room, but a small picture frame just looks lost on a big wall.

When I’m designing pieces here at Service & Sawdust, my goal is always to solve that exact problem—bringing inviting warmth, height, and texture into a space without cluttering the floor. Our handcrafted blanket ladders (swipe through to see the different finishes) are my absolute favorite fix for this because they instantly cozy up a room.

Mystery Solved: From weathered flooring to a premium raw build! 🪚

Yesterday, I challenged you to guess what would become of that rough, weathered piece of walnut flooring. After pulling the old staples, ripping to size, creating flat and smooth surfaces, here is the result: a sleek, minimalist Handcrafted Display Shelf.

This specific piece is actually a personal build for my own home! I love using my own living space as a testing ground for potential new designs and products.I wanted to show it to you completely raw—before any stain or finish—because the craftsmanship speaks for itself. Look at those flush joints with the rabbet groove running across. When you build with military precision and premium hardwoods, you don’t need wood fillers or thick paint to hide mistakes, just time, patience, and a hardcore drive.

Don't let the rough exterior fool you... 🤫🪵

Take a close look at this piece on the miter saw. Right now, it looks like weathered, old hardwood flooring complete with old finish, staples, and grooves...
But as a woodworker, I don't see scrap. I see a hidden TREASURE.

Underneath that rough surface is solid, premium Walnut—one of the most beautiful, durable, and sought-after hardwoods in the world. This piece has incredible density, stunning grain structure, and a deep color that you just can't buy off the shelf at a big-box hardware store. I’m locking this piece into the workbench today to strip away the past and unlock its true potential and purpose.

Hey everyone! Since the page went live yesterday, I wanted to introduce myself to all our new followers.

My name is Gauge Melbourne, and I’m the craftsman behind Service & Sawdust Woodworx. After finishing my time in the military, I wanted to channel that same focus, discipline, and standard of excellence into something tangible and rewarding.

For me, nothing beats taking old timber headed to the dump or high-quality timber and shaping it into a piece that brings warmth and character into your home.
In the shop, I don't cut corners. Whether I am hand-selecting premium hardwoods like walnut and white oak, checking square joints, or applying a custom finish, my goal is to build heirloom-quality decor that actually LASTS.

I want to make it as seamless as possible to bring these pieces into your home, so here is how we handle orders in the shop:
Staple Inventory- We keep a regular rotation of our favorite designs on hand—like our blanket ladders, plant stands, and premium coasters.
Tailored-to-you Finishes: You choose the exact stain, paint, or fire-torched aesthetic you want. Once you pick, I guarantee a 2-day turnaround time on that finish so it's fully cured and ready for local pickup in Idaho Falls.
