These old towels may not look like much, but they are 100% proof that homemade laundry detergent using simple ingredients can work just as well if not better than commercial detergent. I wish you could smell them. Because they don’t smell like anything.

A few days ago they were soaked in dog urine…our oldest dog has lost control of holding her bladder at night at 15 years old. So I have a stinky towel to clean almost every day. These towels went into the wash with no prerinsing. I used 3 Tablespoons of my basic homemade laundry soap recipe and half cup of vinegar in the liquid dispenser. After one wash cycle on hot…not a single sniff of dog urine. I mean a full faced bury your nose in the towel deep sniff. No smell.

Clean living doesn’t require lots of synthetic chemicals or a high price. It just requires a little bit of chemistry which you can do at home with ingredients from the grocery store.

Today’s experiment was to make a felted bar of soap. I recently stumbled upon this concept. Although some people claim that ancient people did this to their soap, I do not believe there is any evidence of it until the Victorian era. You wrap a bar of soap in wool roving and then felt it onto the bar by scrubbing it in your hands under hot water.

The wool truly is felted and sucks onto the soap. Then it makes a ton of lather with only a tiny bit of water. The wool is like a built in wash cloth with soft exfoliation. And it is not supposed to get yucky as long as it dries between uses. It seems to dry out fairly fast. And when the soap is finally used up, all that should be left is a small ball of wool (like a tiny drier ball).

Final experiment for the week ( #4): soap dish made of all natural materials. 100% cotton with coconut fiber mat.

One of the nice things about handmade soap is that it often does not require a lot of water to make a good lather. For some of my bars, simply swiping the bar in the dish with a damp hand is enough. That means your soap last longer because you use less each time but also because it contacts less water and doesn’t sit in water. This dish design allows the water drops to go thru the coconut fiber mat and be absorbed by the cotton bottom on your counter. Then the cotton can just be rinsed out and left to dry when you switch bars if needed.

This one’s going to be tested at my bathroom sink with the Gentle Rose Face Soap which I use twice a day. Same bar of soap going strong for two months now with still a lot left!

Did you know that you can make your own laundry detergent using simple ingredients you can buy from the grocery store? Ingredients you can pronounce, know what they are, and are also significantly less expensive than commercial laundry detergent. This is one of the reasons I actually got into soap making to start with!

I made two batches of laundry soap last night (lemon and lavender) that will last us about 6 months at a fraction of the cost of commercial laundry soap. It all starts with solid Castile Soap which you grate and then mix with common safe-to-use ingredients. Let me know if you’d like to know how. I’d be happy to share what I do.

These were 2 of my best sellers at the last market. I use them both at home myself and really like them. The scents are very fresh and they both clean really well using only simple, clean ingredients.

It’s so encouraging as a new small business owner when you need to make more a product because it sells out ❤️

Experiment 3: crocheted Swiffer mop cover.

A woman at a recent market asked me if I made reusable Swiffer mop covers that could be washed and dried to be more eco-friendly. I said that I would try. This is what I ended up with for my mop.

I tried it and must confess that I had a pretty dirty area on the floor under a bench. I sprayed the floor first with my All Purpose spray cleaner and then scrubbed it with the cotton covered Swiffer. Cleaned it up pretty well. Then I washed and dried the cover and it is ready for another day.

What do you think? Should I make more?

Experiment 2: Soap Dots.

Have you ever been somewhere and there is no soap and you really need to wash your hands? Camping? Picnic? The mall? This happened to me recently in a public restroom where the soap dispensers were empty. Yuck.

A Soap Dot is a single use tiny solid soap that you can carry in your car, diaper bag, purse, or luggage to wash your hands when there is no soap. It’s about the size of an M&M. All you need is a little bit of water. Wet one hand and soap dot in the other. Rub your hands together with the dot between your palms or in the crack between your fingers. Then rinse and it’s gone.

They would be packaged in a small tin with a lid containing 50 soap dots to easily fit anywhere. What do you think of this idea?
