From the moment I saw an authentic Kawandi piece I was a bit obsessed! The pieces I make are definitively NOT authentic Kawandi, but they are inspired by the traditions and beautiful work of the Siddi women of India who keep the tradition of Kawandi alive.

Here is just a small sample of the Kawandi-inspired handwork that I've done over the past few years. It is improv slowed down to a hand stitching pace and I can't get enough of it! The magic is that you work from the outside edge in towards the middle - in the exact OPPOSITE direction that most quilts I create are made. It is fun, freeing, and always gives me something 100% original - even if I'm using the same pile of scraps like I did with the set of four purple placemats.

And in other news ... the first two episodes of my new YouTube "show" called "The Quilty Life with Jenn George Burt" are now available for viewing.

If you head that way, I'd really appreciate your likes, comments, and subscription as I try to get this channel up and running.

These first two episodes are tutorials that show how to make improvisationally pieced wonky stars and stripes. I walk through the whole process and "think out loud" as I work so the viewer understands why I made the choices I did, etc. They are essentially a way to learn how to piece using improv.

The next few episodes will follow this trajectory and I'll do some other types of blocks/units. Eventually I'll have enough "bits" and will do an episode where I show how to turn all those crazy-shaped things into a quilt top that you'll like.

Down the road I might change up the format, but for this improv learning series this seems to be working.

Like the book and pattern publishing, this is a thing that I've been MEANING to do forever, but just never got around to it. July has been my month of doing all the things! [pats self on back]
