Some fun things about this client quilt: she was super worried to send them because the shirts all she had of her late husband’s clothes. It’s worked out perfectly that I was going to visit family 2 weeks ago and we could meet up. My sweet friend’s son will return it for me and I wish I could see the look on her face when she opens it up, but it’s been a pleasure to work with her. I was able to put his name strips on randomly and preserve some of the larger shirts by eliminating the washing strip. It gives the quilt a very custom look and I’m so pleased with the end result. This is the last day of my marketing class and that’s the last handful of berries for this season from my garden. I want to challenge you to pick me, before it’s too late to get that gift done in time for Christmas. Go through your shirts. Go to my website (www.enchanteddesertquilter.com) and print up the worksheet to go with the size quilt you want made with those shirts. Here’s a little behind the scenes on making a T-shirt quilt. First I cut strips of stabilizer to fuse to the T-shirts before cutting them into squares. Then I cut sashings (white on white for this project), I apply the sashings, cut the border fabric into strips and sew into long pieces for the sides. Top and bottom borders go on last. And there are always distractions and interruptions, like you forgot to unpick the pocket on your T-shirt quilt or you answer the phone and hear “MOM!!! I’m having a sewing emergency!!”, so your throw on some clothes while your hair drips all over your shirt, and solve the problem🥰 Cooking meals, cleaning the kitchen and bathroom make you feel like a responsible adult, too. Pretty amazing day.

One of the biggest challenges I see is people undervaluing the skills that and others have honed into a marketable product. On one of the rare times I was interviewing for a job, the interviewer made a comment about my quilting business being my “side hustle”. I clearly explained it was my full blown business that paid the mortgage, all my insurances, fed me, paid my utilities.

I’ve had friends say they’ll do _______ as a side hustle and I’ve told them they need to treat it like a business from the start not only because it may one day be their only reliable income, but because you can’t be respected by others if you don’t respect yourself first.

Value your work and others will, too. There will always be negative Nellies. Just show them you aren’t one of them.

Something that I do differently is I have computer drive and hand-guided skills. When I started I was doing about a two week turnaround. I wanted your quilt back to you as quickly as possible. It was very common to have to wait months to get a quilt back from a long armer. I was a rule breaker. Still am. This quilt was supposed to be twin sized, but I wanted it larger so I bought 2 kits, made the bigger quilt, AND a table runner out of the other 5 blocks. Same applies to customers. I want to make them happy they chose me. I won’t push someone’s quilt back to do “an emergency” quilt for someone. I have to keep my word, but I will do want my machine and I can to have you fall in love with your quilt all over again when you come to pick up.

I’ll also, for an extra fee, make and machine apply your binding. Same goes for either hand or machine finishing your binding. I’ve had clients tell me they’ll never apply their binding again as long as I’m their LAQ🥰🥰

So many people focus on perfection. They don’t think about the time it takes to do what others make look easy. If I were starting over again, I’d tell myself to be patient with myself. Take a class. Ask the questions. None of them are dumb. Find a teacher you like and take another class. Even if someone says you’re not ready for a certain class, take it anyway. You’ll learn something new and by the end of the project, you’ll see progress from the first block to the last. Find someone who is supportive and might make it easier to take a class, see progress, look forward to trying something new. Do you, not someone else. 🥰

When traveling, sometimes I have to improvise. My Ohio son’s flight was delayed due to weather, so he was delayed 24 hours in arriving to our family weekend. He brought his daughter’s dress for some Nonna magic: pockets! I used a piece of cardboard with just the perfect fold to mark what I needed to trim. Eldest granddaughter modeled it so I could eyeball the pocket placements and half an hour later, it is done. I put a pen between the pockets in the last pic because my fingers didn’t show up as well as I’d hoped in the second pic.

Said studly son’s pants don’t even know what hit them🤭

Me: Nonna’s mending. Do you have anything for me?

Granddaughter: My favorite sweatpants!

Straight stitch from the ankle to the end of the seam split, pivot, change to overlock stitch, back down to ankle, backstitch, forward off the ankle edge. That seam wouldn’t dare split on her again.

Previously mended bag liner started fraying. Again. Neither the previous or current fixes were about cosmetics, only regaining functionality. I don’t travel with FrayChek, but Ian Bradley had gorilla glue which is just a stronger version of FrayChek. Problem solved, favorites salvaged, memories made. The day is still young.

My before and after story is simple: I had no choice. I had to keep it together when my life was falling apart or lose everything. Then the economy tanked, a health challenge came in from left field, and I needed to move. I found a private money lender with favorable terms, and downsized to more affordable accommodations.

I learned so much. How to ask for help, accept offered help, and that naysayers can’t stop me when I’ve got a plan.

So get your shirts together and let’s make your quilt happen. Choose one shirt, then another. Together we can make your memories last.
