Fun fact. As a kid we had dahlias. No clue how to care for them. I don’t think we even knew that the more you cut them the more that they grow more flowers. We just let them miss their potential and stay on the stalk.

Growing them as an adult I feel like I’m in this amazing, massive international horticulture club. Because it is. It’s a whole world. I love growing them. Learning them. And they’re gorgeous. Today I was just thankful to see their blooms.

I’m happily surprised the coral rose colored geum is having it’s 2nd flush! The orange is coming back for round two as well.

Kitty is so happy, always following me in the garden. She likes the shade of the plants and pops out to play and surprise me often 🥰

Heads up that the cut flowers won’t be cheap!!! 😂 BUT, they’ll be worth every penny!! 💵

I’m prepping ground in the heat, in the height of allergy season for me (which has been beyond brutal for me) so I can plant beautiful flowers for you!

SO much work, effort, planning, and then physical labor goes into bringing you a gorgeous cut flower arrangement. Cost of plants, seeds, supplies, electricity, water, and then there’s everything needed to keep them thriving and healthy - added nutrients, pest control (natural), and supplies protect them from too much heat, the freeze, etc etc etc!

Let’s talk about the GOOD BUGS! 🐞 Did you know there’s such a thing?! (And yes Im hatching some praying mantis, I’ll share pictures when they hatch!!)

I’m sure you first think of ladybugs, butterflies, maybe spiders and praying mantice as good bugs. There’s even more!

There are 2 options to keep the flowers from getting completely eaten by “bad” bugs. 1 - spray pesticides and kill all bugs good and bad. Or, 2 - Build up your environment of “good bugs” so that there is a balance and these eat the “bad” bugs. And crops can survive.

Thrips and spider mites are notorious for literally sucking the life right out of dahlias and everyday garden crops and flowers. You’d recognize this by leaf shriveling and curling. I learned a few years ago how to easily combat these bugs, and save my entire crop by introducing - beneficial nematodes, ladybugs, lacewing, and pirate bugs. These are my go-to’s now.

Spring here started off with a heavy munching from the bad bugs. So, tonight I applied my orders of pirate bugs and beneficial nematodes (microscopic soil dwellers that eat the bad bugs larvae). These will take care of it quickly.

There are several suppliers for these bugs. They are costly, mainly shipping because they must be overnighted. But they are important, to bring you flowers that are NON TOXIC when you smell them (unlike the imported flowers that have 60 toxic chemicals on them 😭), and are safe for our precious environment, critical pollinators 🐝 , and our water.

Doing what’s right for you, and me - is not the cheapest, or easiest. But it’s what kind of flower farmer I aim to be.

The dahlias started blooming Memorial Weekend! 🎊

My first to bloom are always the varieties that came from “Petite Floret’s” seed.

This means dahlia bouquets will be available in just a few short weeks 😀 Keep an eye out!!! ✏️ 📅

A moment for the peony poppies. 😍 They make a cheerful view, speckled throughout the field from so many seeds that spread last year.

Also…B- for Violet’s selfie-practice 📸. I was surprised she even stayed still long enough she’ll be a pro in no time! 😂
