I absolutely love these hawthorn trees. Gorgeous fall berries, clouds of white spring flowers, beloved by birds all year long… but for all those same reasons, we should never have planted them right next to the pool. I’m pretty sure the pool guy plots an “accident” for the trees at least once a season. Right plant, right place, folks. Next time…

I’m always pleased by beauty that just pops up on its own, with no regard for my designs. These sweet peas really aren’t supposed to be growing in the strawberries, but the plants have informed me that it’s none of my business. I must say I like their attitude.

It’s pasture mowing day here. This winter and spring has been so awfully dry that we are afraid wildfire season will start early, so we are doing our first mow a bit earlier than usual to try to keep the fuel load around us as low as possible. I’m running around the fields this morning, cutting wildflowers, harvesting one last load of miner’s lettuce and chickweed for the chickens, and whispering to all the little creatures to move out before the mower comes through. Never my favorite day of the year, but necessary.

Spring is in full swing here in Northern California. Lavender is blossoming and the lamb’s ear is perking up!
