🎨 There is an entire chapter in 's Tiny Experiments book called The Power of Intentional Imperfection. And I think, especially since it follows the chapter about procrastination, that it's a really good read.

🎨 There's a story in this chapter about not trying to be number one, but going for "strategic mediocrity" instead. It's the same sort of idea that chasing vitality (in social media or business) doesn't actually get you what you want. And trying to be the best all the time takes you right into burnout territory.

🎨 Imperfection is a much more attainable, and interesting, goal for creatives like us anyway.

🎨 Have you ever heard the saying "Beyoncé also has 24 hours in a day?" Generally it's when you're feeling like you haven't gotten enough done and someone is trying to motivate you. But Beyoncé has people for cooking and laundry and landscaping and and and. But your brain doesn't always remember that.

🎨 So before we start our weekend hopefully full of sewing and crafting and creating. But even if life gets in the way, repeat after me:

My quilts are pretty.
My creativity is important.
It's ok if I can only do a little bit.
Quilting and crafting on social media isn't the whole picture.
I'm not going to feel bad when mine doesn't look like theirs.

🎨 Happy Friday!

🎨 I'm calling this your Creative Pinky Swearℒ️. What is a pact you could make with yourself about your creativity, your curiosity, your art practice, to create your own tiny experiment?

🎨 It could have something to do with your Messy Middle from a couple days ago, it's a place to start if you're looking for an idea, but it doesn't have to.

🎨 Like I've said before, there's no grading or giveaway involved in 30 Days of Dopamine. This is for you to make time for your creative brain. I'll check back in a couple of days to see if you've got your pact, aka the Creative Pinky Swear, experiment figured out.

🎨 Who else has heard that it takes 30 days to make a habit? Or been asked what your New Year's resolution is? But then neither the resolution or the habit building really makes it past day 11? Just me, cool cool cool.

🎨 The Tiny Experiments book by defines a pact i as a simple and repeatable activity to get you closer to a goal, but the results of each individual trial or activity don't matter. If you say "I'm going to draw every day for 10 days", it doesn't matter if you're Van Gogh or having problems with stick figures. What matters is the showing up to do it.

🎨 Things pop up. Kids get sick. You get sick. The plants need weeding. Someone needs to grab milk. And having a tool in place that says you don't have to do it 100% makes it easier to give it the 5% you have that day. Because that's still more than not doing it.

🎨 The more I was planning out 30 Days of Dopamine this year, the more I realized I wanted to focus on sort of the joy and the mess of the creative process.

🎨 We've often been told that there's only one way to do things and that way is the best and being the best is most important and if your don't try to be the best then why try at all???

🎨 No, thank you.

🎨 Maybe it's because I'm a lefty living amongst all you right handed people, but the "best way" for everyone else has rarely been a good fit for me.

🎨 Our challenge for today is to show or comment or just think about your messy middle, aka a part of your process that is imperfect and you don't like to share. Mine is organization in particular cleaning up after a project. So then my project leftovers build up in stratas and my workspace gets tiny and who wants to see let alone make something in that?

🎨 But as Ms. Frizzle says, "get messy, make mistakes!"

🎨 Happy June! Happy Pride! And Happy 30 Days of Dopamine! 30 Days of Dopamine is the online event we've done each June for the past couple of years, where we take 30 days to focus on creativity and crafting and how it plays a role in our mental health. Spoiler alert, crafting is good for your brain.

🎨 I always start 30 Days of Dopamine with a book, and this time it's Tiny Experiments by Anne-Laure Le Cunff. Last year was all about what is art and the year before was an art therapy book, and this year I wanted to have something that could work with how to fit your creativity into your regular life. The best way I can explain it is that Tiny Experiments is like the opposite of "how to make money from your hobbies".

🎨 Tiny Experiments gives you tools and permission to try, and fail, and then try in a way that's better suited for you. Experiments can be refined and made better, it's not pass/fail. And neither is your creative process.

πŸ’ Handle Sonata is our pattern of the month for May (last couple of days for your discount code to work btw). What do you think the pattern for June will be?

🎨 Next week is June, which means we're gearing up for another round of 30 Days of Dopamine, our free month-long event where we try and help our brains through crafting and creativity.

🎨 We've done interviews with quilters and makers and entrepreneurs and therapists, and every one has different little tidbits to help. In a world that helps no one make art a priority, this is a little push for you to take the time for yourself.

🎨 Like we said, this is free. We're not selling anything. You don't have to sign up anywhere. This isn't a class where someone is grading on how well you're doing or keeping to a schedule. The pressure is off.

🎨 Follow along. See how focusing on creativity for 30 days makes you feel. 30 Days of Dopamine starts Monday June 1st.
