Step No. 3 of the hand dyeing process is to remove the fibers from the banana 🍌 leaves mixture and submerge them in a container of clean water. Swirl fibers around in the water with your fingers and remove from container.

Step No. 5 is to squeeze excess liquid from the fiber and hang to dry on a clothes line. Avoid leaving the fibers in direct sunlight to avoid premature fading. 🪢🌳🌞

Step No. 2 of the hand dyeing process is boiling a pot of water and diffusing the liquid with the crushed plants or insects (shown left). The fibers are then submerged in the dye and allowed to soak to absorb pigment. The more intense the desired color, the longer the fibers are left to marinate in the mixture. 🧶

The pot on the right contains water boiled with banana 🍌 leaves, which will serve as a binding agent between the dye and the fiber. After the desired shade is achieved, the fiber is immersed in the boiled leaves to initiate the color-fasting process.

With another week of ‘gray’ or ‘grey’ (however you spell it, the weather is blah), we thought you could use some virtual color and sunshine. Admittedly we added a few extra pillows for the shot, but this family of five loves color and warmth and we love their style.

Some of my favorite finds in the Chichicastenago market were the beautiful pillowcases made out of traditional huipil. While short blouses are the most common version of the huipil seen throughout Central America, the word can actually refer to anything from a blouse to a dress. Some of the more ornate huipil are reserved for special occasions and frequently favor images of saints, deities, mythological animals, feathers or heavy floral patterns. Many garments also include colorful fringing and could explain why some indigenous communities believe that rainbows are actually the fringe of a huipil. 🌈

This is a demonstration of step #1 in the natural dyeing process, which is collecting the pigment from the source. The mortar and pestle contain insects called cochineal, which colonize the prickly pear cactus and are collected by hand from the succulent. These insects create bold fuchsia and pink hues once ground down into a fine powder and combined with water. Cochineal is widely used natural dye due to its colorfastness. It's also commonly used as a food dye. You know that pink drink you like to order at Starbucks? Yep, the pink is from cochineal! ☕️ 🐜

Before synthetic dyes made their debut on the world stage in the mid 1800's, fabrics were colored primarily with the use of plants and bugs. Today, many weaving collectives in Guatemala aim to preserve the art of natural hand dying in line with centuries of rich tradition. 🌈🌿
