From archival photograph to painterly tribute.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the honor of creating this portrait of June Wayne, recipient of the National Women’s Caucus for Art Lifetime Achievement Award (1985), as part of the Zoom Project.

Working from an archival photograph, I chose not to create a literal copy, but an interpretive portrait that reflects her presence through expressive color, layered textures, and light. The background is inspired by one of June Wayne’s iconic works, serving as a visual backdrop that places her within her own artistic world while honoring the spirit of the Zoom Project.

These images document the painting’s evolution, from the first marks to the final brushstrokes. Each stage represents a conversation between observation and interpretation, gradually moving beyond likeness to capture the quiet strength, vision, and legacy of a pioneering artist whose influence continues to inspire generations.

It has been a privilege to celebrate June Wayne’s remarkable contributions to the arts through my own artistic voice.
