Today we mourn the passing of a wonderful man and former Olympic Decathlon champion Rafer Johnson. He meant so much to to so many, not just as a tremendous athlete but someone who cared deeply about sport, humanity and our youth. In the 60s he had a modest home in South LA not far from where I grew up and he remained a local hero. The world today may best remember him for lighting the torch at the 1984 Olympic Games at the Coliseum in which he jogged up from the field to the Peristyle. That torch burns today and tomorrow for Rafer Johnson and a wreath sits beside his bronze plaque in the Coliseum Court of Honor. Thank you Rafer Johnson for all you've done and the good you continue to inspire others to do. RIP. 🙏
