The grapefruit candle has been with me since the very beginning.
I've been making it since I started Velvet Earth Candles in 2018. It was one of my original five scents—alongside lavender sandalwood, eucalyptus, and lemongrass. Back then, it was poured into a simple clear 4 oz glass jar, filled with grapefruit-colored wax and topped with a plastic lid. It was humble, but it held the spark of something special.
But the idea for grapefruit actually came a little earlier.
I was at a small mixology party, and someone made me a Greyhound— with fresh grapefruit juice and a salted rim. It was so simple, but so good. Bright, slightly bitter, a little unexpected. I remember thinking how refreshing it felt-how different it was from the usual scents and flavors I was drawn to at the time. From that moment on, I fell in love with grapefruit juice, and the idea stuck with me.
How things have changed.
Over the years, this candle has been revised to perfection-again and again. Each batch taught me something new. I've refined the wax for a cleaner, longer burn, adjusted the wick for a more even flame, and reimagined the vessel to be more sustainable and thoughtfully designed. What started as a simple candle has grown into something far more intentional-better for the environment, and better in the way it performs in your home.
But some things have never changed.
The grapefruit candle still brings me so much joy-especially at the market table. I love watching people experience it for the first time, seeing their reaction, connecting in that moment. And I love knowing that it will soon be part of their home, their quiet spaces, their everyday rituals. That connection means everything to me.
It's not a scent you often find in stores—not like this. That's the beauty of something handmade. It began as an image in my mind, and through time, care, and creativity, it became something real.
That's art. That's the craft. That's the gift | get to share.
The grapefruit candle isn't just one of my originals—it's a reflection of growth, intention, and the journey of creating something meaningful, one pour at a time.
