When I was first making brushes, I'd hold the slab in one hand and drill with the other. It wasn't easy, but it got the job done. Patrick suggested I use the vise. I tried it with sponges around the sides to keep the clay from being marked, but it was too soft. The clay bulged out from pressure distortion. So I asked if he could find me two boards in his giant pile of random wood pieces, and lo and behold! They can screw to the vise and hold the clay snug between them, and the stability of the wood creates opposite pressure, ensuring the slab remains flat on either side.

A huge thank you to everyone who purchased from my shop updateβ€”I'm so incredibly grateful and honestly blown away by your enthusiasm for my work.

There are still items left, and as I mentioned, I need to sell as much as possible before I move my family across country!

So tomorrow, April 8th, I'll be running a sale of everything in my shop. It won't last long, so make sure to set your alarms!

(All items pictured are still available. Shop link in my bio)

Some of you may remember these mugs from my stories. I had asked for everyone's thoughts on unglazed mugs, including an unglazed handle. I love raw clay, I think it's so beautiful, but for a mug it feels so wrong to me!

I ended up with a little bit of a mixed lot: some mugs were glazed fully (center mugs of photos 1 & 2), and others only had the handle glazed (center mugs of photo 3).

I only truly noticed a different for one of my clays (not pictured) where the clay was the most beautiful deep red when unglazed, and then became more of a brown clay when glazed. But otherwise it think it just comes down to preference for the buyer!

Which do you prefer?

Here's a quick peek into boring holes into brush handles. These are single brush handles, so they'll only get one bunch of fibers rather than a brush that has multiple holes. I use a drill and a bit that is an appropriate size. For these little ones I just have to hold the clay in one hand and drill with the other.

Two things:

1️⃣ I'm making brushes again! I'll post some process photos as I go and answer any questions in the comments or stories. In this carousel I'm working on the first stages which is making a slab and cutting the shapes. I have some sketches to go off of, and then as I go, random shapes emerge that I like. I like to use premade forms like these from .pottery.forms to make more structured shapes.

2️⃣ I've been avoiding posting lately because I know how much Instagram pushes video. The truth is, I don't have the time to film or edit video right now. So I just haven't posted anything. But I do have time for photos, so that's what I'll be focusing on at the moment (in terms of content).

(They will not be ready for Christmas shopping, fyi)

I'm also getting ready for a trip to Massachusetts, to visit my family for the holidays. We are staying longer than usual, until mid January. I'm really hoping for some snow! I love snow, and miss winter. It'll be fun to bring Louisa sledding and make snowmen. She's only seen snow once, and it was a dusting.

Just curious: do you love winter? β›ΈοΈβ„οΈπŸ§€
