Since 2015, Great Northern Candle Co. has drawn its inspiration from forests, coastlines, rivers, old towns, and the quiet mysteries of the Pacific Northwest.
Over time, those inspirations slowly began to take shape as a town of my own creation - one I’ve been quietly building for many years.
Its name is Hemlock Falls.
A river runs from a waterfall that divides the town it begins.
And that’s not the only thing dividing it.
The forests surrounding the Falls are older than anyone remembers. In the hills above, elk move quietly, keepers of the town’s secrets.
Some come to town for the waterfalls… Some for the beauty, the trails, the wholesome small town vibe or the annual fall festival. Others arrive in search of answers, though few ever understand the question.
All of them dream of a life in Hemlock Falls while none of them could ever understand the cost of staying.
Hemlock Falls is a world shaped by many real places. It was inspired by the small towns I’ve lived in throughout my life - and by years spent as a photographer, a shop owner, a creative, and an observer. I’ve spent a lifetime taking quiet notes, gathering details, stories, and inspiration from the kinds of places and people that stay with you.
Those pieces eventually became Hemlock Falls.
Soon I’ll begin sharing fragments from the town here - its places, its folklore, and the people who live there - through story, scent, and the evolving archives of Hemlock Falls, as I work toward releasing the first book set in this world.
Because sometimes a place is more than a setting.
Sometimes a place is the story.
