Turning Bytes Woodturning Unveiling Wood's Hidden Wonders

My journey as a woodturner begins with the raw essence of wood.

I find immense joy in transforming plain or even discarded timber into captivating works of art on the lathe. Each turn of the tool is an act of discovery, as I meticulously shape the wood to reveal its inherent natural beauty and intricate grain. I'm particularly drawn to the unique character of spalted and curly varieties, creating pieces that invite you to not only admire but to touch and exper

ience their warmth and texture. My passion is to craft functional art that brings the unexpected wonders of wood into your home.

Quick clip of a beech blank going from raw wood to a rough-turned natural edge bowl — start to finish in 23 seconds.

At this stage the goal isn't a finished piece, it's a stable one. The walls stay thick and the bark edge stays on while it dries. Beech moves a fair amount as it dries, so patience here pays off later. Once the moisture content stabilizes, it goes back on the lathe for the finish turning.

That color straight off the tool is hard to beat.

Some footage of hollowing ( hollowing tools) and finishing this walnut hollow form. This particular batch has not only the rich walnut tones, but also bark and spalting in the heartwood.

What do you think about the shape? This was a crotch piece originally from a Northern Ohio walnut tree that came down during a storm. I was fortunate to not have any major cracks during the drying process.

Finish is tung oil.
