A mantel is one of the first things you see when you walk into a room, and one of the easiest places for a room to look flat.

The trick is layering. On this mantel, the mirror goes in first. It’s the tallest piece, it gives everything else a backdrop, and it bounces light around the room. The framed art leans in front of it rather than beside it, which instantly adds depth.

From there, it’s about variety. Three candlesticks at different heights keep your eye moving. Gilt, black iron and dried natural stems mix finishes, so the arrangement feels collected instead of matched. And the styling carries down to the hearth, with a woven basket on one side and a lantern on the other, balanced without being identical.

Just as important is what’s not there. A mantel looks finished when every piece has a little room to breathe.

By day, this is a formal living room. By evening, it’s where the grown-ups unwind with friends.

This couple each loved something different. She was drawn to florals, and he leaned toward a more modern, clean-lined look. They wanted a room for the adults, and they looked to me to bring both of their styles together into a space they could both enjoy.

Florals don’t have to be sweet or overly feminine. I chose patterns in deeper, muted tones, like the delicate floral on the drapery and the soft, rug-inspired prints on the pillows, so they feel a little more masculine and grounded. The shapes stay clean and simple: a tailored tufted sofa, an uncluttered layout, nothing fussy. Warm, moody walls tie it all together, so by nightfall the room takes on a bit of a speakeasy vibe.

Two styles, one room that feels like both of them.

Every room I design starts with one decision that sets the direction for everything else. In this living room, it was the paint color.

We chose Benjamin Moore Cinnamon Slate, a warm, muted taupe with a soft hint of mauve. It gave the room a grounded, slightly moody feel, and it became the starting point for every choice that followed.

Next came the rug. We looked for one with taupe and brown tones that picked up the wall color, so the floor and walls felt connected instead of competing.

Then we added the softer layers. The drapery has a delicate floral pattern in the same color family as the walls, subtle enough that it reads as texture from across the room. That left space for the throw pillows, with a pattern inspired by traditional rug designs and a gently faded, antique-market feel. They echo the rug on the floor and bring it up to eye level, so everything feels connected without matching too perfectly.

Finally, the accents. Leather chairs, a brass tray, aged wood and a little greenery bring the contrast and warmth that keep a tonal room from feeling flat. These are the finishing touches that make it feel lived in.

When each decision builds on the one before, a room feels cohesive rather than collected over time.

“It truly looked like a ‘before’ picture.”

That’s how my client described her primary bedroom. Three years after moving in, it still had white walls, a few pieces of furniture, and nothing that made it feel like theirs.

Swipe to see how it came together. We started with a plan: renderings of the bed wall and the sitting area, so she could see the room before anything was ordered. Then came installation, with warm taupe walls, grasscloth behind the bed, new lighting, and every piece placed with a laser level.

What I love most is her line about the budget. Every project has places where spending makes a big difference and places where it doesn’t. Knowing which is which is a big part of my job.

This is the entry to our lake house on Lake Wallenpaupack. I’ll be sharing more about building our cabin in the coming weeks, from the first plans to the finishing touches. Stay tuned!

An entryway has one of the hardest jobs in the house. Wet boots, beach towels, snow tracked in all winter, and it still has to feel like you’ve arrived somewhere you love.

Every choice here started with how we actually use it. The herringbone brick floor can take whatever comes through the door, and it adds warmth and pattern without competing with the logs. In a room with this much wood, I wanted contrast, so I went with a black hall tree and painted the walls a dark grey. The darker colors give your eye somewhere to rest and make the wood look even warmer. And the outline of Lake Wallenpaupack on the wall is the kind of personal piece that makes a space feel like yours.

A well-designed room shouldn’t only look good for a photo, it should work for real life, too.

Most of the rooms I'm called into aren't "wrong." The furniture is nice. The colors are fine. But something keeps the room from feeling done.

Usually it's a handful of small things working against each other: a rug that's a size too small, lighting that all comes from the ceiling, windows left bare, and no finishing layers to make the room feel lived in.

None of these is hard to spot once you know what to look for. Fixing them so they work together is where design comes in.

Most people assume design is what takes the longest. Usually it's the waiting.

Those woven Roman shades? Made to measure. Many of the pieces that make a room feel finished are made to order, and lead times can run several months. Add the holidays, and a project that starts in March often isn't done until summer.

That's why fall is one of the best times to begin. We can plan the design now, place orders over the winter, and have everything installed and styled by spring.

Moody meets tropical. 🌴

When a couple I had worked with previously purchased a home in Florida, I was so happy they reached out for help again. Together, we created a room that pairs a moody feel with relaxed tropical touches.

A beautiful rattan chandelier and a plaid-patterned jute rug bring warmth, texture, and a little unexpected pattern to the space.

It’s always special to help returning clients make a new house feel like home.

Sometimes it just takes someone to see a space differently. ✨

My clients purchased a vacation home in Florida and asked me to help them create a vision for their new space.
This empty alcove was originally intended to be a closet, but because it sits near the dining room and kitchen, I immediately saw another possibility, a coffee/wine bar. ☕️🍷
I created this concept to help them visualize the idea, and from hundreds of miles away, they took that vision and made it their own with their contractor. It’s always exciting to see an idea that started on paper come to life.

Good design isn’t always about adding pretty things. Sometimes it’s simply about seeing the potential in a space and finding a better way to use it.

Making a new house feel like home.

This couple recently moved into their townhome and wanted help making the space feel warmer, more inviting, and more finished. For the dining room, I focused on filling the larger space with properly scaled furniture, adding warmth with rich velvet curtains, and creating a comfortable dining area for six so they have plenty of room for entertaining.

A large sideboard gives them extra storage while filling the long wall, and the oversized mirror, lamps, soft rug, and simple accessories help pull everything together without making the room feel overly decorated.

Sometimes it’s not about changing the entire space, it’s about choosing the right pieces, in the right scale, and putting them in the right place.
