One of my favorite things about vintage treasures is discovering the history behind them!
While cleaning up these beautiful, vintage Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln needlework pieces, I noticed an NRA stamp on the back. This isn’t related to the modern organization most people think of. The stamp actually stands for the National Recovery Administration, a program created during the Great Depression in 1933 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.
Many needlework patterns, textiles, and handmade goods from the 1930s carried this emblem, helping date these pieces to that era. I love knowing that these portraits have likely been treasured for nearly a century and have witnessed so much American history along the way.
If you added this 1976 Fred Roberts Co. porcelain Betsy Ross in rocking chair while sewing a flag to the Lincoln needlework…what a cool 250th Anniversary display you would have. Betsy has a music box that plays Yankee Doodle Dandy & also features a 1776 bicentennial emblem.
And if you love vintage books, you’ll want to check out this green one from 1881! 🇺🇸
Vintage pieces always have a story to tell. ❤️
