Creativity and fandom are on full display in downtown Atlanta as Dragon Con celebrates its 40th anniversary this Labor Day weekend.

Thousands of fans have descended on the city for the annual convention, many showing off elaborate costumes inspired by movies, television shows, video games, comics and pop culture.

Among the cosplayers are this couple, celebrating Pizza Hut's nostalgic Book It! program.

If you're of a certain age you will remember a time when you were a kid that if you read a certain amount each month, you would be rewarded with a coupon for a free Pizza Hut personal pan pizza.

And part of the branding included a purple pinback button that you could wear. For each book you read, you'd place a star sticker on the button to track your progress toward the free pizza goal.

Book It! was the brainchild of Arthur Gunther, the president of Pizza Hut at the time, and Bud Gates, a marketing executive at the company. Prompted by a 1984 initiative from then-President Ronald Reagan which called for businesses to advocate for education, Gunther was inspired to create a reading program by the way his son struggled with literacy as a young child.

Believe it or not, the program still exists today!

Teachers can enroll their classrooms and track the daily reading minutes habits of their students – and at the end of each month, every student who meets their goal will receive a certificate good for one free Pizza Hut single-topping personal pan pizza.

Yesterday, a judge disqualified Stockbridge City Council member LaKeisha Gantt from the panel expected to decide whether to remove Mayor Jayden Williams from office, ruling Gantt has shown bias against the mayor.

Retired judge Gino Brogdon Sr. is presiding over the City Council process that could lead to the mayor’s removal.

During a Zoom hearing Monday with attorneys for Williams and the City, the judge said he was particularly swayed by a threatening email Gantt sent the mayor in April, and by her decision to contact the mayor’s grandmother to tell her Williams should resign because of the allegations.

The contents of the email surfaced Aug. 20, when Williams’ attorney asked Gantt to read it aloud during a hearing related to the matter in Henry County Superior Court.

In the email, she tells Williams “to stop being two-faced” and says: “This is your final warning and reset with me.”

It adds: “I can be your friend or your enemy. Your choice.”

Judge Brogdon said the email was “clearly a threat.”

“I can’t get over it,” he added. “I think it would be patently unfair to Mayor Williams to have her on this panel in light of that stated animus.”

The panel, which includes the city’s four other Council members, is expected to make a decision about Williams after they hear the findings of an independent investigation of him, and potentially other evidence, at a hearing on Sept. 12.

Williams can appeal a vote to remove him from office to the Superior Court. The Sept. 12 hearing will function similar to a trial.
