Our top 3 rules for a functional cabinet:
1. Group supplies by task (bathroom, glass, floors, etc.)
2. Label, label, label.
3. Keep “daily” cleaning supplies at eye level. Cleaners that are used less often can go higher or lower.

Most of the people asking for our help with organizing have tried doing it themselves but ended up frustrated.

One of the main problems is the bins and baskets they bought don’t work well in the space. Most people buy the wrong thing, realize it doesn’t fit, and then just keep it because they don’t want to deal with the return.

No matter how good my clients intentions were, I end up replacing stacks of bins that almost fit, but actually just ended up wasting space and money.

Here are three tips to make your DIY organization project work for you!

1. Measure EVERYTHING: Don’t just guess the width. You need side-to-side, front-to-back, and top-to-bottom measurements. And don’t forget the “hidden” space-stealers—measure around those hinges and trim so your bins actually slide out.

2. Fill the Depth: Always buy containers that go all the way to the back of the shelf. If you leave a 4-inch gap in front of a bin, I guarantee you’re going to start “stuffing” things there. Use the full depth so you can’t create a new mess.

3. Take a “Reference Photo”: Take a photo on your phone of the space you’re wanting to organize so you can visualize the space and the things in it while picking out product.

Wanted to bring this beauty back to the spotlight for Throwback Thursday.

This is one of my favorite pantries that we organized. We love the contrast in colors and textures we were able to see in both organization product by using wood, water hyacinth, metal and acrylic and by decanting the food into glass canisters.
