Aaron Kent’s Stain & Relics at MoCAA, April 17
By Rodriguez Collection Team

Aaron Kent will open his exhibition Stain & Relics on May 17, 2026, in a collaboration between the Fine Arts Ceramic Center and Annex Gallery. The show brings together a body of work developed over years of material investigation, where ceramics, printmaking, and hybrid processes intersect without submitting to stable disciplinary boundaries.

His practice is grounded in direct engagement with matter. Bones, eroded surfaces, and residues of thermal and chemical processes function as carriers of memory. Layers of experience settle into these materials, turning each object into a physical record of what has been lived. Kent’s work does not pursue purity of medium or flawless resolution; it holds onto transformation as evidence—cracks, stains, fractures, and marks that register what has taken place.

This approach is closely tied to his personal trajectory. Experiences of loss, exposure to contexts of social crisis, and his relationship to ceramics as a practice once shared with his mother shape a body of work in which material and affect operate on the same plane. Each piece retains a singular, irreducible condition, even when it approaches formats traditionally associated with repetition, such as printmaking.

Stain & Relics offers the community an opportunity to engage with a practice of notable emotional density and procedural rigor. The exhibition reinforces MoCA Américas’ commitment to work that expands the field of contemporary art through a sustained engagement with matter, time, and lived experience.

The launch of this commentary platform emerges from the experience and vision of the Fine Arts Ceramic Center, an institution dedicated to the study, dissemination, and promotion of contemporary ceramic art. Based in South Florida—a region shaped by cultural diversity and constant exchange—the Center introduces a space for critical reading, observation, and dialogue that connects ceramic practices from around the world, addressing both their historical roots and their present-day expressions.

Ceramics has long served as a shared language across human cultures. Long before writing systems existed, clay was already recording gestures, beliefs, daily practices, and worldviews. Vessels, ritual figures, domestic objects, and architectural elements have accompanied humanity across continents, forging a deep connection between material, territory, and community. This platform recognizes that historical continuity and understands ceramics not merely as a technique or artistic discipline, but as a living archive of human experience.

For the ceramic artist community of South Florida, this space seeks to become a point of reference and connection: a place to access rigorous information, encounter other scenes, expand critical perspectives, and situate local practice within a global context. In a region rich in voices, accents, and traditions, sharing knowledge and reflection on ceramics also means strengthening community bonds, encouraging exchange, and reaffirming the cultural value of a medium that continues to shape identities, memories, and possible futures.

🎉 An Unforgettable Evening for Ceramics in Miami 🎉

On February 24th, the Ceramic League of Miami inaugurated its 73rd Annual Member’s Exhibition in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas (MoCAA) and the Fine Arts Ceramic Center (FACC)—a partnership that reaffirms our shared commitment to expanding education, appreciation, and equitable access to the ceramic arts across our community.

💫 This year’s gathering was distinguished by the presence of master ceramicist Tom Coleman, a seminal figure in contemporary ceramics. Coleman delivered an illuminating keynote that traced the evolution of his practice, revealing the creative experiences and disciplined rigor that have shaped his remarkable career. His approach—deeply informed by Japanese tradition, symmetry, and a pursuit of pure form—rendered the evening unforgettable for artists, students, and devoted admirers of the medium.

🏺 Founded in 1950 by a visionary group of women, the Ceramic League of Miami has, for more than seven decades, stood as the leading institution for ceramicists in Miami-Dade. Its legacy encompasses national exhibitions, educational partnerships, public fairs, and a school equipped with specialized firing processes and resources unique within the region. Entire generations have found their artistic path here—students who began in high school continue creating well into retirement, sustained by the same passion that first brought them to clay.

🖼️ This year’s exhibition brought together members, families, friends, and the wider public, who presented and viewed works selected by both expert jurors and the community. It remains a cherished tradition that celebrates creative diversity and the collaborative spirit that defines the CLM.

🔥 The Fine Arts Ceramic Center, affiliated with MoCA-Americas, was founded in 2020 by collector Leonardo Rodríguez. Its inaugural project—Fine Arts of the Plate—invited fifty artists to create works on ceramic plates, launching a line of inquiry that now encompasses murals, sculptures, installations, and an ever-expanding collection.

🌎 Since then, the FACC has fostered workshops, residencies, and collaborations with artists from Cuba and throughout the Americas, strengthening the presence of contemporary ceramics across South Florida. Its participation in the 57th Annual NCECA Conference – CURRENT in Cincinnati affirmed its role as an active center for experimentation and technical excellence.

✨ Today, the FACC continues to develop numerous new works, expand firing and production methodologies, and share with its community the beauty, history, and boundless expressive potential of ceramics as a contemporary artistic language.

🤝 Both the Ceramic League of Miami and the Fine Arts Ceramic Center uphold a clear mission: ceramics must remain a space open to all. Regardless of race, gender, belief, sexual orientation, or ability, both institutions work to build an inclusive, safe, and discrimination-free environment where diversity enriches learning and creation.

🌱 In every project, class, and exhibition, we celebrate not only the medium itself but the many voices that shape it—a vibrant community reflecting the very best of South Florida.
