The Splendour of The Middle JoMon CulTure:

The Japanese Jomon period, characterised by a prehistoric huntergatherer sociey with a vigorous material culture, is particularly noted for
its long-lasting ceramic traditions. Currently enjoying great populariy in
Japan, the Jomon culture remains largely unknown in europe. This is due
to its absence from most Japanese collections outside Japan – despite the
eforts of several european museums in the 2000s to invite temporary
exhibitions with representative Jomon ‘national treasures’ loaned from

When I was five or 6, I had a crush on "an older woman" Deanna (She was 6 or 7) who lived on the other side of the block. Across the street from her house was built a new sledding hill. They piled up dirt that had clay embedded in it.

We took buckets to the hill and gathered clay, that we wetted down (with her mother's help) and we made stuff with it, to bake in her mother's oven. I asked how we would color the clay, and her mother said she had white shoe polish we could use to color the clay. I had just watched Moby Dick on T.V., where Gregory Peck starred as Captain Ahab. I decided, since we could color our sculpture with white, I would make Moby Dick. (yes, even back then, I payed attention to my materials!)

;) I colored the whale shape with the white shoe polish and it was fired in the oven. It came out really awesome! That was the first thing I ever made in clay.
