What if your home were designed around your actual life, rather than someone else’s checklist?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most people assume every kitchen needs the same things.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A giant pantry.
A massive island.
Miles of cabinetry.
Dedicated storage for every possible appliance.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But that’s not how we approach design.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Before we ever start planning cabinetry or selecting finishes, we spend time understanding how our clients actually live.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For this family, food storage wasn’t the priority.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Books were.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They kept only a handful of pantry staples on hand, but they had a growing collection of books they reached for every day. Instead of dedicating valuable square footage to a large pantry, we incorporated a slim pull-out for essentials by the fridge.
With this need met, we created an expansive built-in for book and crafts storage that connects the dining room and kitchen into one cohesive space.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The result isn’t just a room that looks beautiful.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s a room that reflects who they are.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The books they love.
The games their children pull out on rainy afternoons.
The way they gather around the table.
The routines that make up everyday life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s the difference between designing for a trend and designing for a person.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because the most successful spaces aren’t built around what everyone else says you should have.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They’re built around what matters most to you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you were designing your home around how you actually live, what would get priority?
- Books?
- Entertaining?
- Cooking?
- Hobbies?
- Collections?
- Something else entirely?

Can we talk about shower systems for a minute?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most people focus on the finishes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The tile.
The fixtures.
The pretty showerhead.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But one of the most important decisions happens behind the wall.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How the shower actually functions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whenever possible, we like to incorporate both a fixed showerhead and a handheld spray. Not because it’s trendy, but because it makes everyday life easier.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Need to rinse the shower walls when you’re cleaning?
The handheld is invaluable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Need to wash a child, a pet, or even your own hair without stepping fully into the spray?
The handheld makes that simple too.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And if you ever find yourself recovering from an injury or needing a little more flexibility in how you shower, you’ll be grateful for the options.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But here’s the detail most people don’t know to ask about:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not all shower systems allow you to control multiple water sources independently.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In many systems, you’re forced to choose between the showerhead, handheld, or tub filler rather than using them together.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s why we’re particular about the valves and controls we specify.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of our favorites is Grohe’s SmartControl system because each water source can be activated independently with a simple push of a button. Want just the showerhead? Easy. The handheld? Easy. Both at the same time? Also easy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No guessing.
No confusing diverters.
No trying to remember which direction a lever needs to turn.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just a shower that works intuitively.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because great design isn’t only about how something looks.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s about creating spaces that support real life in thoughtful, practical ways every single day.

Vent hoods are one of those kitchen details people often don’t think much about… until they start noticing grease buildup, lingering odors, or steam impacting nearby finishes over time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And while Minnesota code doesn’t always require them, we always recommend them when possible, even if it means using a recirculating model.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because a well-designed kitchen isn’t just about how it looks the day it’s installed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s about how the space functions, feels, and holds up through everyday life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The size of the hood, the capture area, the filtration system, and whether it vents externally all impact how effectively it actually protects the space around it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These are the kinds of details we think through carefully during the design process so the finished result not only feels beautiful, but supports the way the home functions long-term.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thoughtful design lives in the details people don’t always immediately see, but absolutely experience over time.

This shower floor looks deceptively simple.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But creating a curbless shower with large-format tile takes serious planning, precision, and craftsmanship behind the scenes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because larger tiles don’t naturally want to slope toward a drain the way smaller mosaic tiles do, every cut and angle has to be carefully considered so water flows properly while the finished surface is still visually seamless.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Details like this are a masterclass in why skilled tradespeople matter so much.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A talented tile installer doesn’t just execute the design. They help make these kinds of thoughtful details possible.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s also why we value working with trusted tradespeople and contractor teams we’ve partnered with repeatedly. We know the level of care, collaboration, and craftsmanship required to bring these details to life well.

One of the biggest things we notice in homes is how often temporary solutions quietly become permanent.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A dining table turns into a workspace.
A corner becomes overflow storage.
A room starts trying to serve too many purposes at once.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And eventually, the home stops supporting the way life actually functions day-to-day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For this project, the goal wasn’t a dramatic renovation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was helping the home return to a sense of clarity, balance, and intention through thoughtful furnishings, intentional layout shifts, and spaces that supported both work and rest more effectively.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because your nervous system notices when there’s no separation between work and rest.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Creating a dedicated office brought separation, focus, and calm back into the home, while allowing the dining room to reclaim its role as a place for gathering, connection, and everyday meals together.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because the dining room sits at the center of the home’s footprint, every decision needed to create connection.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The finishes, shapes, and materials were selected to relate to the adjacent kitchen, office, entry, and surrounding living areas, so the home felt cohesive as you moved through it, while still allowing each space to maintain its own identity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When those transitions are thoughtfully considered, a home starts to feel calmer, more supportive, and more aligned with the season of life you’re actually in.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because design isn’t only about aesthetics. It’s about creating spaces that help daily life feel easier, more intentional, and more connected with how you want to live.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The smallest shifts can sometimes create the deepest sense of ease.

Not everything in this space is new.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And that’s exactly the point.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The rugs, the tables, the collected pieces from travels - these were already part of our clients’ story.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our role wasn’t to replace them.
It was to create a space where they could live together in a way that felt cohesive, intentional, and grounded.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When a home reflects both where you’ve been and how you live now…
it creates a kind of depth you can’t fake.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The best spaces usually begin with what you already love.

Have you touched a tree lately?

I know it sounds simple… maybe even a little strange.

But your nervous system is constantly responding to your environment.

And nature?
It has a way of bringing everything back to baseline.

Try this:

Find a tree that draws you in.
Place your hands on the trunk.
Close your eyes.
Take five slow breaths.

That’s it.

It’s one of the simplest ways to reset your system.

And it’s the same idea we think about in design:
how your environment supports you without you having to think about it.

You made it to spring - and in the construction world, this is go time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Especially for kitchen remodels.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Longer days. Better weather.
And honestly… the ability to grill outside while your kitchen is under construction? Game changer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But here’s what most people don’t realize:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 The best time to start planning for that is now.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The projects that feel seamless and well thought-out?
They had time behind them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And if spring isn’t your timeline?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fall and winter can actually be even better for construction -
more availability, more flexibility, less pressure.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The right time isn’t just about the season.
It’s about how you want the process to feel.

Most homes stop at paint. That’s usually where things fall flat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We love paint. It sets the tone, the mood, the foundation.
But lately, we’re reaching for finishes that bring more depth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Wallpaper layered above paneling? Yes.
Tadelakt plaster in showers instead of grout lines? Absolutely.
Roman clay walls to bring an earthy texture into a space already filled with color and pattern? You bet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These materials don’t just look different.
They feel different.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They shift the energy of a space in a way that’s hard to explain, but easy to experience.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And don’t forget the ceiling.
It’s one of the most underused surfaces in a home and one of the most impactful.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Wallpaper.
Tinted paint.
Even a custom night sky.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s so much more possible than most people realize.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If something here sparked an idea for your own space, that’s usually where we start.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
