A lot of us have passed through a town like this and barely had time to notice it, but it sticks with you anyway. The water tower, the grain elevator, the old brick buildings downtown, it all feels tied to the days when rail cars, mill work, and farm traffic kept the place moving.
Montello has that lived-in look that comes from being the center of things for a long time without ever putting on airs. It feels like a place where people know the back roads, the best coffee counter, and which storefront used to be something else entirely.
I’ve always liked towns that don’t try too hard. They just keep showing up, year after year, and that means something.
