This is one of the most common façade-lighting mistakes we see.
The standard approach often starts-and ends-with rows of downlights installed in the soffits or overhangs, casting light from top to bottom.
Downlights are not the problem.
Relying on them as the entire façade-lighting strategy is.
When downlights are expected to do everything:
→ Repetitive bright patches dominate the façade
→ Visible glare reduces visual comfort
→ Textures and vertical architectural elements disappear
→ The entrance, lower façade and landscape feel disconnected.
A properly planned scheme creates layers through soft wall washing, controlled grazing, concealed linear lighting and subtle landscape accents.
Each layer has a purpose.
The difference is not simply more brightness or more fixtures. It is better placement, optics, aiming and control.
A façade should not just be visible after sunset-it should reveal the architecture.
