If you really love design, then you know it’s more than just having an eye for it. It’s having an eye for complexity too, from craft and composition to story and purpose. Everything is deeper than you think.

The same is true of life. Sometimes life, like design, looks effortless, but it’s far from it. Because anything worth something takes time, care and yes, effort to build.

That’s why I created Life Architecture. A way to celebrate beauty while looking beyond the surface as we build our worlds, inside and out.

Consider this your introduction to The Living Edit.

Over the past year, we’ve gone deep on some pretty big subjects ranging from the importance of home to reinvention, health, and even friendship. Posing some pretty sizable questions about how we think and, ultimately, how we live. I learned something from everything I wrote.  And you seemed to enjoy the articles, offering a lot of feedback and comments.

So we’re bringing some of the most-read pieces over here in a new editorial series. Think of it as The Essential Edition: the ideas, research and takeaways, with hopefully enough to get you thinking and curious to read more.

We started yesterday with the premise, Life Architecture. And more favorites are coming.

If you’d like to read The Living Edit or learn more about subscribing, comment LIVING EDIT and we’ll send you everything you need. N. B. x

Happy Thursday! Today, we begin a tour, the first in a 6-part series, to introduce you to our Substack readers’ favorite articles from the past year, starting with the idea that sparked it all: Life Architecture.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing a taste of some of the interesting, useful and occasionally unexpected ideas we cover over there, from how we think and live to beauty, home, health, friendship and more.

If you’d like to read more, or learn about becoming a Founding Member at a special anniversary rate, comment “LIVING EDIT” and we’ll send you everything you need to take a look. I’d be delighted if you decided to join me. N B x

Who would have thought a year ago I’d jump into the complete unknown to do something I’d always dreamed of doing?

But here we are. One year in.

There have been high points, low points and some real bumps along the way. A lot of figuring it out as we went. But through it all, we kept going.

And we’re not stopping now. There’s so much more to come. Thanks for coming along for the ride. N. B. x

Ahh, what a difference a year makes.

If you could stop what you’re doing to pursue a dream, a passion you had the experience and know-how to actually build, would you do it? Even if it meant walking away from position, money and security?

Crazy, or no?

What price in this life are you willing to pay to bet on yourself?

I’d love to know. Comment below and share if you, or someone you know, has ever taken a great risk. N. B. x

Ahh, the ole’ one foot in, one foot out. What’s August for you?

I believe two things can be true at one time. We can savor the last few weeks of summer and get excited and revved up about the autumn days ahead. So, while August is winding down and summer may be coming to a sweet end, it’s not over yet! In fact, it’s time to quietly get inspired. Enjoy what’s still here, while letting your mind wander toward what’s next. A little rest, a little reflection, a little forward motion.

That’s where I am. How about you? N. B. x

There’s something about the end of August that makes you want to do two things at once: hold on and move forward. Maybe it’s knowing summer can’t last that makes us want a little more of it, while September’s inevitable return has us already thinking about what’s next.

Whatever it is, enjoy it. As hard as it is to believe, summer is nearing its end. Back to school and back to work are just around the corner. Finish what you can. Enjoy the surroundings of summer. Savor the last, and some of the best, summer food.

The August Edit is about both: enjoying the season we’re still in while quietly getting ready for what comes next.

Ahh, the final days of summer. How slow summer seemed to get here, and how fast it’s gone.

This week I’m off. Nothing exotic, or particularly planned. It’s home for a few laid-back days. I’ll be playing them all by ear, chillin’, taking it easy, and there will likely be some sitting on a screened porch at my cousin’s lake house involved. I’m officially on Tennessee time.

Stay tuned for this week’s Substack. It may be a day late because we’ve officially Gone Fishin’ this week. But I promise to make it a good one, with some design, food and, of course, a few of my thoughts! N. B. x

A little change of pace this week, and it will be a little light overall. Keeping things loose, easy and very much in the moment. No big idea to unpack, no deep dive, just a few things worth enjoying, looking at and thinking about as we enjoy the last days of summer.

I’m calling this my Gone Fishing week. I’ll still be popping in with a few things, but otherwise I’m taking a bit of my own advice and enjoying a breather. We’ll be back in full form next week.

And as always we’ll have  Substack. And this week, a little design, a little life wisdom and something delicious along the way. Come along. N. B. x
