Revisiting another Before and After: I’ve moved twice since, but it’s always satisfying to look back at photos of my old apartment in Gowanus.

This apartment will always be especially meaningful to me. It was the first space I shared widely, thanks to Wendy Goodman and New York Magazine, and in many ways it was where I first put my design philosophy into practice.

I’ve always thought of interior design as a form of storytelling. I’m drawn to rooms with personality, and to combinations that perhaps *shouldn’t* work on paper, but somehow make sense in situ.

Looking back at Before and After photos is one of the most satisfying parts of the job. Inspired by our shared love of antique textiles, historic interiors, and years of traveling together, Esha Ahmed founder Esha Ahmed and I imagined the new Makrosha showroom as a 19th-century atelier, with a few irreverent flashes of modern sensibility.

The Esha Ahmed office is a space separated from the rest of the showroom, but the connective threads continue (literally - the wallpaper is silver foil with woven linen layered on top.) We wanted to show off the “Rise and Grid” woven plaid, which is based on a 1930s French document. The painting of Roman ruins is also French, from the 1920s.

Recently went to see Belle de Jour at the Paris Theater. When Catherine Deneuve removed her hat in an opening scene to reveal her perfect hair, a man sitting near me gasped loudly.
