Harvest time has begun. I’m always cutting back and drying things out to save seeds, feed the birds and keep things healthy. An evening spent floral designing your outside space is one of my favorite ways to wind down the day and passively spread seeds about the landscape🫶

I’ll be at the SoCo Farmers' Market tomorrow August 1st from 9am-1pm weaving flower crowns. All flowers were grown in our gardens. Every piece of the crown is compostable. Dry it, use the seeds to plant your garden, keep the base to fill with flowers in each season or just throw it all in the compost to give back to the earth 🫶

I’m lucky enough to have been able to grow regeneratively on this property now for 5 years. It has seen many phases and grown so much. First the fencing was my “cue to care” and I grew within its bounds. As I added signage and dead hedges throughout all the green space, my cues to care grew and with it the life of the property. Have I mentioned I’ve also be doing this all for FREE?! Yes, yes, yes I purchase some seeds every year I didn’t have to save or spread from the previous year and I add in a few fruit trees and native plugs that I haven’t encountered growing here but in essence, you don’t have to spend any money at all if what you want is a thriving garden. All you need is to let things grow, watch, listen to and care for the things that are growing there. A lot of these natives I never seeded here, they were already in the seed bank, just waiting for the opportunity to stretch their leaves and their roots. Spread and share seeds and split plants with neighbors and friends, collect native seeds (responsibly) from the roadsides, root cuttings, build back soil quality by letting plants grow and feeding them back in, start creating dead hedges from excess garden material (*invasive species control*) & watch as it breaks down into hyper local mulchy compost that the plants will love. This can all be done regeneratively with what we already have all around us with no $$ added, just a little time, patience and creative problem solving 😉

If you don’t have land of your own to work on. Find a spot that needs invasives cut out of it and nurture the natives trying to survive there. There is always somewhere in our communities our hands can be helpful.

We all need each other. We thrive together. A well companion planted garden practically hums with biodiversity and bounty. Introduced species and native species alike can benefit one another and these plants need us to keep them safe, keep them from being overrun by invasives and ensure that everyone has enough light and water. We humans exist better this way too. Working with each other and learning from one another. Existing alongside all other species in reciprocity.
