BravinLee will collaborate with ArtPirt Kingston to bring you our second iteration of Stay Frosty. It is free and open to all. Opening: Thursday evening June 25. Hours: TBA. ArtPort Kingston, 80 Smith Street, Kingston, NY, 12401

Part tailgate. Part site-specific exhibition. Part trunk show. Part art fair. Stay Frosty’s first edition, presented in Fall 2025 in a parking lot in Harlem with 30 participants, reimagined each vehicle as a self-contained, curated presentation — where trunks opened to sculptural creations, installation, sound, multiples, and conversation. The result was dynamic, accessible, and community-driven—art experienced beyond the confines of a conventional setting. The participants are artists, dealers, non-profits, and independent curators. Stay Frosty Kingston transforms ArtPort’s parking lots into a dynamic exhibition space featuring over 50 presentations, including site-specific sculptures, installations, performances, and workshops.

The 2006 Ray of Hope suite of works on paper by Louise Bourgeois is currently on view at Hauser & Wirth, NY in her exhibition Gathering Wool.

This Louise Bourgeois image for the BravinLee rug is selected from a suite of 24 watercolor
and pencil drawings on embossed paper titled Ray
of Hope (2006). At the same time she was working
in fabric, Bourgeois made hundreds of red gouache
drawings on the themes of nature, pregnancy, and
motherhood. Here, Bourgeois exercised tight control
over the lines, while in other works, she allowed
the watery blood-red paint to move freely on the
surface of damp paper. Bourgeois saw abstraction
as a means of understanding and coping with her
feelings and used verbs like “calming,” “caressing,”
or “stabbing” to describe strokes. Rays of hope
burst from the center of the composition, strong and
insistent, for as Bourgeois remarked, “Red is an
affirmation at any cost—regardless of the dangers
in fighting—of contradiction, of aggression. It’s
symbolic of the intensity of the emotions involved.”

Wangechi Mutu's "Bloody Rug" in the Galleria Borghese.

"Continuing this exercise in the exteriorization of visceral sensations, Bloody Rug becomes a silent physical record of violence—an interiorized trauma passed down through generations. The stains of past wounds are not easily reconciled, remaining embedded in the very fabric of identity, both individual and communal. Installed in the same room as Domenichino’s The Hunting of Diana, this work establishes a counter-narrative, confronting the tradition of gendered spectacle. While in the painting, the women are watched by hidden men as an allegory of intrusion, the deep red carpet is marked and stained, refusing to conceal the trauma of gender and racial violence, instead absorbing and exposing its traces. Contained within the rectangular space of this domestic textile, it attempts a silent record of violence—one that already extends beyond the confines of the piece itself."
