Is Texas BBQ better than all others?

Black's Barbecue in Austin, Texas is a local institution and a true culinary treasure. The Black family have been serving barbecue for decades, and you can really taste their knowledge and experience with every bite. Arguably there might be better barbecue restaurants, some think Franklin's is the best in the country, but none have the heritage of Black's. I visit one of their locations whenever I'm in Austin. I always eat far too much.

Barbecue might be one of the most controversial foods in certain parts of the United States. Which style is best? What meat is considered BBQ, what cuts are best, what is the sauce, etc. Firm opinions can easily escalate, even among friends and family, and quickly become fighting words. What is your favorite?

I was recently in Nashville, Tennessee, a great city for tasty barbecue. On this night, I dined at a downtown institution - Martin's. Its large, on multiple levels, with indoor and outdoor spaces, a long line of waiting customers, a rough and tumble vibe, and delicious food.

How much heat can you take? I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to food spice heat. But on a recent visit to Hattie B's Hot Chicken in Nashville, TN I was able to go as high as medium - pretty darn hot and much hotter than my normal. Although not the original hot chicken restaurant, Hattie B's might be one of the best.

The amazing chocolate chip cookie, known as 'The Cookie' created by Chef Christophe of Bristol Farms, is so good it deserves a big presentation visible from the front door.

Today has been a long time coming. We’ve been working with Bristol Farms for more than two years to help them launch a new brand called Newfound Market. It blends all the best grocery elements of Bristol Farms with an elevated culinary experience expressed with a full sit down restaurant and food hall. more photos to come.

Urban stores present really interesting conditions - tight spaces, multiple floors, limited sight lines, and more. These conditions mean you have to make the most of what you have to work with, grab customer attention where you can, and communicate clearly.

Our client called them Wow Zones - unexpected display elements intended to surprise customers. This seating area and coffee display straddle a decorated concrete column and provide an opportunity for pause.

Sometimes the project site is the best source for unusual materials, like in this store where bench seats, tables, and banquettes were fabricated from redwood trees that once stood on the site.

Would you drive twenty minutes, cross a river, and a state line to get biscuits in Vermont? If they're from King Arthur Bakery you would. And we did. Surprisingly, these yankee biscuits are better than any we found south of the Mason Dixon Line.

What would Dolly do? I'm pretty sure she would recommend a sandwich from Biscuit Love in the Gulch neighborhood of Nashville TN. Lines are long and they form early, but the wait is well worth it. A visit to music city must include a stop here. I was very sad to see the bottom of this plate. This fried chicken, aged cheese, sausage gravy, and fried egg biscuit was delicious.
