I think they should teach gardening in school. It should be a mandatory requisite. Can you imagine all the world problems we could solve if everyone learned to garden?
Problem solving. Resourcefulness. Patience. Math. Science. Wildlife and Insect habitat. Color theory. Food insecurity. Health and wellness. Environmental preservation. Life cycles. Biodiversity (and diversity in general). History. Cultural appreciation. Civics.
Just to name a few.
The last couple of years I’ve watched my garden triple in size, mostly on its own accord. I saw my first hummingbird last week. The butterflies are daily visitors. There are now generations of bumblebees.
Am I still in an obliging battle with scale? Yes. Do I have to accept the deer as natural pruners? Mhm. Will the peonies receive their yearly bout of powdery mildew? Yup.
A tomato plant I received as a gift just up and decided it was finished for the season, but not before lending itself to inspiration.
Beauty is everywhere—much further than this screen with pretty pictures of garden cuts.
So if you can, grow a garden.
