Happy June!

Lets set ourselves up for a successful month of sewing by giving our spaces a little reset. It doesn’t matter if you have a whole studio, or you sew on the dining room table, these little steps will help your tools work for you.

1. Clean your sewing machine! Did you know it’s best practice to clean your machine after every project, or every 8-10 hours of sewing? Get to work! Your machine with thank you! Don’t forget oil if your machine needs it!

2. Change your sewing machine needle. Just like cleaning your machine, you should be changing your needle every 8-10 hours of sewing. A good reminder is “every new quilt deserves a new needle”. I’ve been guilty of neglecting this task until one breaks, but not today!

3. Change your rotary blade. Having a sharp blade makes such a difference when cutting out large projects and I love that fresh blade feeling of easily gliding through fabrics. A dull blade can cause uneven cuts, fraying fabrics, and wrist discomfort.

4. Clean your sewing surfaces. While a space being too clean can sometimes stress me out, a cluttered surface can be worse. I hate knocking things over when working with a large piece of fabric or having to move things before I can get to pressing. My work stations should be ready when I am!

5. Make a to do list… a REALISTIC one. Maybe you can sew 5 quilt tops in a month, or maybe it’s 5 blocks. You know your own abilities and your to do list should reflect what you can realistically accomplish. I like to write each individual project on a small sticky note and attach it to my wall. That way I can reorganize my list as needed and have that satisfying moment of tearing one off when I finish it.

6. Fill some bobbins. Grab your favorite piecing thread in a neutral color and take 10 minutes to fill as many bobbins as you can. Don’t loose the momentum of a good sewing session by having to stop and fill bobbins.

Let me know in the comments what you’re doing to set yourself up for a successful month of sewing.

Happy sewing!

Half square triangles, or HST’s, are one of the most common blocks used in quilting, and for good reason. These simple units and be turned into so many designs! Today we’re working on stars, but I would love to know, what is your favorite HST block or pattern?

June is my birthday month, and as the spoiled baby of the family, I start celebrating on the first and make it last the whole 30 days. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate that prioritizing spending time in front of the sewing machine every single day, and of course I’m taking you along for the ride!
So get your sewing machine cleaned and pop in a fresh needle. While you’re at it, change your rotary blade, and join me for Sew Much June!

Strip pieces allows you to work with larger pieces than cut them down to size instead of struggling with small pieces that can stretch out of shape and shift while sewing more easily.

The hill I’m willing to die on: pressing your fabrics is the most important step in quilting. Don’t skip this one! If your fabrics aren’t flat, you can’t cut them accurately, and if they aren’t cut accurately, you can’t piece accurately, and then everything is just one big mess!
I don’t care if you starch or not, or use steam or a dry iron, JUST DO IT!

I’m stitching up something totally different!
While I’m usually now for working with bright colors and modern prints, I think it’s so much fun to do shake things up with something completely outside your norm. That’s why I was so excited when launched the Qual Run Quilt Kit and asked me to stitch up the shop sample.
This kit featured the Beatrice quilt pattern by - a fun and beginner friendly quilt that will be perfect for stash fabrics after this project, and the fabric line Qual Run from . The tradition colors in these fabrics are so warm and welcoming. I can’t stop touching them!
