From sketch to paint.

Okay, so if you saw my last post, you know I started this butterfly with a fairly precise sketch. Like really mapped out, trying to get everything just right. But then I realized, since I was planning to do multiple butterflies, that I really didn’t want to go through that process multiple times 😅

So I scrapped that version and did quick outlines so I could get to the fun part, painting.

And honestly, that little switch made it so much better. Especially since I’ve been trying to paint “looser”.

Here’s the end result. What do you all think? 🤍

Starting something new over here…

Today’s studio time has been all about sketching butterflies for a western inspired collection I’ve been slowly working on. I’ll be honest… drawing and sketching stage is probably my least favorite part of my process. It always feels a little slow and messy while I’m figuring things out. But it’s a necessary step before I get to the parts I really love.

Once the outlines are done, that’s when the fun starts. Painting is hands down my favorite part, watching the watercolor spread, layering colors, and bringing the artwork to life.

For now though, it’s sketching and dreaming about what these will become.

Do you enjoy the sketching stage of creating, or are you more of a “get me to the fun part” person like me?

Just me and my sketchbook today.

I decided to play around with gouache, a medium I’m definitely not totally comfortable with yet. I ended up painting this little hydrangea on a whim. No plan, no pressure… just experimenting and seeing what would happen.

Truthfully, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I just figured it out as I went, with zero expectations attached to the outcome.

Sometimes I need a painting session like this, no agenda, no finished product in mind, especially while I’m letting ideas simmer for the next big project. It’s amazing what shows up when you’re just having fun with it.

And even when it turns into a bit of a mess, I always walk away with something , a lesson, a new technique, or at least a good reminder to loosen up.

Do you ever create just to play, with no end goal?

It’s been a while since I’ve shared any of my wallpaper designs, but this one deserves a little spotlight.

It has been my most popular design on Spoonflower and it’s easy to see why. The textured leaves have a subtle almost tropical feel, but the warm golden beige tones and creamy ivory background keep it soft, neutral, and oh so sophisticated.

It’s one of those patterns that works just about anywhere, from cozy bedrooms to bright entryways, it's bold and adds warmth but neutral enough that it doesn't overwhelm the space.

It's also available in fabric and multiple color ways and scales.

You can find it in my Spoonflower shop here:

So I'm curious… which do you love more? The arch cut or the square?

Both of these Falling in Love with Baby invitations feature my hand painted watercolor pumpkin with blush pink roses, eucalyptus, and pheasant feathers for the perfect mix of cozy, romantic fall vibes.

The arch has such a soft, dreamy feel, yet modern, trendy feel, while the square keeps things classic and timeless. I honestly can’t pick a favorite! Which would you choose for a fall baby shower?

You all loved the Falling in Love with Baby invitation, so I thought I’d share a peek at the rest of the collection!

I had so much fun painting all the little details for this one. The watercolor pumpkin, soft blush roses, eucalyptus, snowberries, and those cozy pheasant feathers. Seeing them come together across the whole suite, from the welcome sign and diaper raffle tickets to the thank you cards makes it feel so complete and cohesive.

It’s such a sweet and romantic look for a fall baby shower warm, soft, and just a touch rustic. You can see the full Falling in Love with Baby collection through the link in my bio!.

Happy Halloween! This is literally the only holiday decoration I have up this year. I was going through some old artwork I had for this thing that I’m doing, I’ll tell you more about that later 😉, and found this in a stack and thought hmm.. that would look cute on my little easel. So there it is. My Halloween decorating efforts were strong this year 😆
