🫜”Planting a garden of any sort symbolizes hope. Hope in tomorrow. Hope that something beautiful is about to happen.” - Beatrix Potter 🫛

Spring brings such a flurry of activity and ambition. The list of outdoor projects has no end, and the reality of what can be accomplished fades as soon as the May flies begin to bite - which in Massachusetts seems to happen on the first warm day in April.

I’ve been plotting all winter for Oldfield Society’s growth. Our first newsletter, updates to the website, new products, and a Beatrix Potter candle to add to the Anthology Collection all will be rolling out in time for Mother’s Day. However, I need your help in deciding a couple of key details. Which silhouette to choose for the candle label? What elements come to mind as far as fragrance when you think of Beatrix Potter?

My inspiration for Beatrix’s silhouette came from two photos. When I think of her, she’s lingering among her gardens, overflowing with foxgloves, peonies, hydrangeas, lilacs, and wisteria vines. Although, I think she likes to have a bit of fresh mint, chamomile, and lemon balm on hand to pick for her tea as well. Maybe her fragrance should be some soft floral notes with an earthy, herbal base?

Please let me know your thoughts on fragrance, and if you wouldn’t mind voting for your favorite silhouette, that would be a great help too! 🗳️

While I was in Virginia a couple of weeks ago, I had the great opportunity to visit the Poe Museum in Richmond. When I used to teach Poe’s works, my favorite part was telling my students all about the author - a glimpse into Poe’s tragic life often sparked the connection for his motivations and inspirations for writing. The “Father of the Detective Story” was credited for inventing the genre in 1841 with “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”. Best-loved Poe work for me is a difficult choice. The Raven? Fall of the House of Usher? Do you have a favorite Poe short story or poem?

📚🎨Little Women Retreat Day 3 - a celebration of creativity and sisterhood. We spent the morning lingering over tea and conversation followed by an afternoon of watercolor lessons by inspiring Russian artist Aleona Isakova. We played dress-up in true Little Women style for a farewell candlelight dinner, and savored all the glory and goodness of new friendships. ❤️

💕 I’m finding inspiration in the loveliest of places. Today begins day one of the Little Women retreat with . I made it out of Massachusetts yesterday morning just before the blizzard. This setting in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is out of a storybook. A glimpse of the Lincoln Suite - my home for the next few days. The turret room/reading nook is my favorite spot. 🩷

🍁🍂🐿️ Happy Autumn! I celebrated fall’s arrival by candle testing our new seasonal vessels - love these pumpkins! Think “sweater weather” for the fragrance with a base of oakmoss and sage blended with apple, peach, and just a hint of mint. It gives all the fall feels. I’ll have these plus all the candles from the Anthology and Holiday Collections along with lots of wonderfully bookish treasures at the upcoming on October 4th & 5th at Crescent Farm in Haverhill, Mass. We’ll update the online shop too so if you can’t make it to the show, you can still preview all the new additions. 🍂🍁🐿️

📚 "To see the Summer Sky / Is Poetry, though never in a Book it lie." - Emily Dickinson

This summer has been lovely, but I can feel autumn in the air. This time of year, I'm lesson planning and preparing the classroom for learners, feeling the butterflies of a new year. It's strange not to be doing that right now, but I still have the butterflies. I'm holding tight to dreaming, hopeful this choice is the right one. In fact, I treated myself to a visit with Miss Emily the other day. She never fails to provide inspiration.

When I think about all the years I have lived in Massachusetts, I know I have taken its offerings for granted. I graduated from Emily's alma mater, took a course strictly on her work, and the strange thing is I never visited her home. I found myself out in Amherst last week, and decided it was time to call upon my friend.

During that visit, Emily whispered strength to me. I discovered that she was actually not such a recluse until her later years, and even then, she was merely tired of society's rules of engagement. She only wanted to attend the events and calls from visitors of those whom she was interested. She loved children, had a marvelous sense of humor, and was actually a redhead.

Emily's bedroom was my favorite part of the visit. She fangirled over the Bronte sisters and had portraits of two of the three hanging on her wall. It's the little basket on her dresser, however, that stole my heart. When she was up in her room writing at her desk, she had a perfect view of the comings and goings of Amherst. When her niece and nephews would run over from their home next door, she would lower gingerbread down to them in the tiny basket. They, in return, would reply with their own creative and thankful gestures - a love note, a flower picked from the garden.

My heart was certainly refilled with sweet simplicity, grateful to enjoy special time with such a dear friend. 🍂

As I turned off the lights in the new studio last night, I caught a glimpse of the future - candles, books, classes, book clubs, community. One step closer to Oldfield Society 2.0. There is a tremendous way to go, but feeling hopeful that our September launch will be magical. 📚

🦞PEI Part 2: Megan Follows WAS Anne Shirley - the talented actress from my childhood and star of the 1985 Anne of Green Gables movies. As if our visit to PEI wasn’t enchanting enough, surprise! The incredible Hayley Solano was somehow able to arrange an amazing closing dinner with Megan Follows at Dalvey by the Sea. She was absolutely one of the loveliest and most gracious women I have had the pleasure to meet. The hugs, the smiles, the answers to all our crazy questions, her genuine kindness, Meg was nothing short of brilliant. All this after days filled with new bosom friendships, musicals, touring, meals to die for, and an unforgettable carriage ride around the Lake of Shining Waters. My cup runneth over. 💕

🍄 “Nobody is ever too old to dream. And dreams never grow old.” — L.M. Montgomery 🍄 My heart and soul are brimming with renewal and creativity after finally visiting the inspirational setting for L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. Walking the grounds of this fairy tale setting brought one of my favorite classic series to life in a way that I can only explain as utterly magical. So thankful to for creating this “enchanting” trip for our book club, and making one of my dreams come true. 🩷
