✂️ Registration is now open for several new class offerings: Garment Sewing Foundations Level 1 (finally!) and its prerequisite, Sewing 101, taught in four classes or a more intensive bootcamp over two consecutive days.

🧵 Garment Sewing Foundations Level 1 — Wednesdays in July or Saturdays in October (Sewing 101 is a prerequisite, or similar experience)
🧵 Sewing 101 Foundations — Saturdays in September
🧵 Sewing 101 Foundations — Thursdays in October/November
🧵 Sewing 101 Bootcamp — the same 12-hour curriculum taught over two consecutive days on July 10-11

🧵Garment Sewing Foundations 1
A four-part series designed to help you build real garment sewing skills step by step. Throughout the series, students will build both technical sewing skills and a personal design portfolio while learning the techniques and finishing details that give handmade garments a polished, professional look.

🧵Sewing 101
Sewing 101 is a foundational course designed for beginners who already know basic machine operation. This course is designed to build a rock-solid foundation from the ground up. We teach the professional techniques and insider methods that make future projects easier, cleaner, and a lot less frustrating.

Test driving 🚗 the pivoting feature on this new Janome! When my presser foot goes off the pedal there’s an automatic lift which makes tight turns a breeze. Love it ❤️, 10/10, highly recommend!

Happy Monday 👗everyone! It was fun to flip through vintage patterns in the shop this weekend for a look into fashion history. In the front display we have patterns from the 60s and 70s, with some cool design details that could translate into modern fashion (swipe for the second picture because we are kind of obsessed with this belted maxi dress with a hood). Cheers to one year! 🥳 Last June we opened the doors to Boho Fabrics in Sparks, MD to bring apparel fabrics, notions, and now sewing machines to you in person! 🧵

Over the past year, we’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many of you, helping with sewing projects big and small, and sharing in your creative journeys. There’s also the happiness that planning and teaching classes brings.

Watching this community grow has brought so much joy to our lives, and we’re incredibly grateful for your support. ❤️

If you know me, you know I love vintage sewing machines! 🧵🪡

I love the craftsmanship of them and I love how they were made in a time where things were made with care and not treated as disposable. Most of the time they can still be repaired, unless it’s a part availability issue.

I’m still learning but I really enjoy it when I can fix a vintage machine. Sometimes machines are so loved you can feel that someone really enjoyed sewing and making beautiful things with it. It’s like that good energy carries over from the past - and it makes me so happy. ❤️

We try to save sewing machines from the landfill when we can. Each machine tells a story. For example, the sewing machines from the 50s and the 60s were during a time where there was a big boom for home sewing machines for garment sewing. There were new technological advances where you could now go from just straight stitch to zigzag stitch capabilities - letting the home sewist do button holes, stretch fabrics, and all sorts of things. There was more attention paid to making pattern making accessible to the home sewist at a good price point - people tell us they have fond memories of getting new patterns with their fabric at the department store on Friday night, it was a big thing!
