Deep within the dappled shade of our coastal forest, a little bit of magic was waiting to bloom. This exquisite specimen is a heritage Bearded Iris, a hybrid of Iris germanica created for the gardens of Europe, a remarkably resilient survivor that has naturalized beautifully among the wild trees. It features a feminine and elegant unruffled form that is characteristic of early nineteenth-century cultivars. The upright standards are a soft, sophisticated blend of pale lavender and ecru, warming to a buttery yellow at the base, while the drooping falls boast dramatic, high-contrast violet veining over lilac. Tucked inside is a velvety orange beard that pops with vibrant color from the lush surrounding greens. 🌿
This lovely patch has returned from the dead, a treasured remnant from my ancestors' lost gardens that we are now able to rediscover and appreciate. Such a profound joy to find such hardy, historic perennials thriving so effortlessly in a natural woodland environment, reminding us of the enduring beauty of a well-planted landscape, even in generations to come. 🍃
